Wayve and Uber have started autonomous trips in London, bringing robotaxi development into one of Europe’s most complex urban environments. Meanwhile, Tesla is reportedly preparing FSD V14 Lite for older Hardware 3 Model S and Model X vehicles, while Volkswagen plans to restructure Cariad around integrating technology from partners such as Rivian and Xpeng.

Several new EVs are taking shape. Nissan is reviving the Pixo as an electric city car, likely with Renault Twingo underpinnings and around 260 km of WLTP range. Hyundai’s next Kona could leave room for a separate Ioniq SUV, although the rumored Ioniq 4 name remains unconfirmed. Further upmarket, Mercedes is developing an 800-volt electric E-Class that may replace the EQE and exceed 750 km of range, while Kia has previewed the large PV7 electric van ahead of its September 14 debut at IAA Transportation.

China remains central to manufacturers’ plans. Jeep intends to build two electric models in Wuhan and export them globally from 2027 through a new Stellantis and Dongfeng venture. BYD has delayed Hungarian production until late 2026 as Denza prepares a more affordable Z9 GT, and the compact, boxy BYD Ti 6 has been spotted testing with expected LiDAR and an electrified powertrain. Separately, Li Auto is investing about $390 million in Sunwoda’s battery division to deepen cooperation on technology, quality and mass production.

Charging and long-distance travel continue to get easier. Ionity has passed 1,500 fast-charging points across 200 German locations, including a new Karlsruhe site with twelve connectors rated at up to 600 kW. New data challenges some assumptions about electrification. Real-world plug-in hybrid CO2 emissions are six times higher than official figures, strengthening the case for the EU’s planned methodology correction from 2027. At the same time, Europe’s trade in used EVs is expanding rapidly, with three-quarters of B2B vehicles exported because domestic markets struggle to absorb large ex-fleet volumes.
