Lucid Cosmos Targets 644 km: What That Means for the Model Y

Lucid has announced a concrete target for its upcoming midsize Cosmos SUV for the first time: more than 400 miles of range, equivalent to over 644 km on a single charge. The figure is not yet an official EPA or WLTP rating, but it shows where Lucid aims to go with efficiency and platform technology.

Lucid Cosmos: First Range Target Makes Its Intent Clear

Lucid has announced a concrete range target for its upcoming midsize Cosmos SUV for the first time: "400-plus miles". That is equivalent to more than 644 km per charge. Importantly, this is currently a manufacturer claim from the development phase, not yet an officially measured EPA (US) or WLTP (Europe) figure.

Even so, the figure is noteworthy because it makes Lucid’s ambitions clear: In the midsize segment, the company does not just want to stand out with design and interior space, but above all with efficiency and genuine long-distance capability.

Comparison With the Tesla Model Y: Why the Figure Needs Context

In the US, the Tesla Model Y is often used as a benchmark. Depending on the version and test cycle, its maximum range is around 357 miles (approximately 575 km). However, a direct comparison is only fair to a limited extent because different standards and equipment specifications can have a major impact on the results.

In the DACH region—Germany, Austria and Switzerland—the WLTP figure is ultimately the main basis for comparison. Even more important is real-world performance: highway energy consumption, charging speed and how consistently the vehicle performs across different temperatures. A prototype claim of "400-plus miles" should therefore primarily be seen as an indication of Lucid’s intended direction.

New Midsize Platform Below the Air and Gravity

The Cosmos is set to be the first model based on Lucid’s new midsize platform, positioned below its existing premium models. The idea is to offer a more affordable entry point than the Air sedan and large Gravity SUV without sacrificing Lucid’s traditional strengths in efficiency and packaging.

Vehicles based on this architecture are expected to start at under $50,000 before taxes, equivalent to roughly 43,200 euros. For Germany, Austria and Switzerland, however, that is only a rough guide, as VAT, duties, exchange rates and equipment packages could significantly affect the final price.

Atlas Drive Unit: Smaller, Lighter and Easier to Manufacture

For the new platform, Lucid is using a newly developed electric drive unit called Atlas. According to the manufacturer, the unit will be smaller, lighter and structurally simpler than Lucid’s existing drive systems. Identical housings and mounting points for the front and rear axles are also intended to simplify production—a classic way to reduce costs and scale output more effectively.

Lucid also claims platform efficiency of up to 4.5 miles/kWh, equivalent to approximately 7.2 km/kWh. That would be a very strong figure and would explain how "400-plus miles" could be realistic without an enormous battery. The battery capacity actually required remains unknown.

Launch Delayed: Production to Begin No Earlier Than the Second Half of 2027

The timeline for the Cosmos has been pushed back. Production is now expected to begin in the second half of 2027. Lucid says the additional time is needed to meet development, process and quality targets—an understandable point, especially when a model introduces both a new platform and a new drive system.

The midsize platform will not be limited to the Cosmos: Two additional models are planned on the same architecture. This points to a genuine push for higher volumes, although its success will depend on financing, manufacturing stability and market demand.

What Buyers Would Gain in Everyday Use if Lucid Delivers on Efficiency

If Lucid can bring the targeted efficiency and range to production, the main everyday benefits would be greater reserves on long trips, fewer charging stops and more flexibility regarding speed, weather and payload. An efficient drivetrain can make a particularly significant difference on highways in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as high cruising speeds substantially increase energy consumption.

For Tesla and other manufacturers in this segment, this is no reason to panic, but it is a clear indication that competition is increasingly shifting away from battery capacity alone and toward system efficiency and platform costs. Companies that lead in these areas can either offer more range or lower prices for the same range.
