VW ID. Polo Faces Supply Crunch Even Before Market Launch

Even before its official sales launch, the VW ID. Polo is emerging as an important source of hope for Volkswagen. More than 30,000 orders are said to have been placed across Europe, with demand in Germany exceeding initial expectations by a particularly wide margin.

The timing is remarkable: Order books only opened at the end of April. Many buyers have ordered the roughly four-meter-long small electric car without having seen it in person or taken it for a test drive.

More than 30,000 early orders show that an electric Volkswagen priced close to €25,000 is striking a chord in the mass market.

Delivery Times Expected to Be at Least Ten Months

Strong demand is colliding with production capacity that was planned well in advance. According to dealers, the production slots currently allocated for numerous configurations have already been taken, potentially increasing the wait to at least ten months.

Volkswagen has confirmed a very positive response from customers and longer delivery times. However, exactly how long buyers will have to wait depends on the trim, powertrain and configuration. Production at the Martorell plant in Spain is expected to be ramped up gradually.

The claim that the ID. Polo is sold out therefore does not mean that no more orders can be placed. Rather, it means that the production allocations currently scheduled are largely filled: high demand → later delivery.

Anyone who does not want to wait around ten months should ask about preconfigured vehicles. Dealers receive their own allocations, which may be available at the sales launch. However, this usually requires less flexibility regarding color, equipment and powertrain.

VW ID. Cross Also Launches with Strong Demand

Alongside the small car, the compact ID. Cross SUV variant is also reportedly off to a good start. The model is already available to configure as the VW ID. Cross and is aimed at buyers who prefer more space and the raised seating position of a crossover.

The strong start reflects the broader interest in the group’s new entry-level electric models. VW, Škoda and Cupra had previously reported high order numbers for their upcoming compact EVs.

Why the Early Success Matters to VW

With a starting price of €24,995, the ID. Polo is entering a price range in which electric cars become attractive to significantly more private buyers. At the same time, the model benefits from a familiar name, an extensive dealer network and its established positioning as a practical small car for everyday use.

The key question now is whether Volkswagen can ramp up production quickly enough. A full order book is initially a strong signal, but delivery times cannot be allowed to spiral indefinitely in the price-sensitive small-car segment. Preconfigured dealer vehicles could at least partially ease the supply crunch at launch.
