Tesla plans additional shifts at Grünheide and picks up the pace
While some manufacturers in Germany are currently discussing capacity utilization and cost-cutting programs, Tesla is taking the opposite approach at Grünheide: more output. Additional shifts are planned for September to move vehicle production toward its target more quickly.
According to plans that have now emerged, the plant is expected to produce around 7,500 vehicles per week from mid-October. Current output is reportedly below 6,500 units per week. The additional shifts are intended to close the gap in the short term.
What exactly is being ramped up—and what is not
According to the report, practically all vehicle production operations, including supporting departments, are affected. Battery and cell production, among other areas, is excluded and is not part of these shift plans.
Notably, Tesla is not only adjusting working hours but is also increasing process speeds in parallel. The company had already announced during the summer that it intended to increase production volumes significantly within a few months.
Cycle time as a lever: from 80 seconds to 45 seconds
A key factor is the cycle time in parts of production: it is said to have fallen from around 80 to 45 seconds. In practical terms, that means more vehicles per hour without necessarily requiring additional production lines.
However, this is an ambitious goal because it does not simply mean working “faster”; it often also requires changes to automation, material flows and quality control. According to the report, these are precisely the areas where problems remain, which is why production volumes have so far fallen short of the target.
Why the additional shifts will not immediately deliver 7,500 vehicles
Current output is said to be around 450 vehicles per shift. Even with the additional shifts, Tesla is therefore initially expected to produce only around 7,100 to 7,300 vehicles during the busiest week in September.
This shows that additional shifts help, but they cannot replace every process optimization. When individual production stages are being converted or further automated, bottlenecks can arise that temporarily slow the ramp-up, even when more workers and shifts are available.
Context: capacity utilization, the market and Germany
Nevertheless, a direct comparison with other manufacturers is not entirely straightforward. According to the report, the Grünheide plant produced just over 202,000 vehicles in 2025 and operated at 54% capacity. There is therefore clear scope to ramp up production, but doing so does not automatically mean that the plant will permanently operate “at full capacity.”
On the demand side, Tesla has recently regained momentum in Germany: new registrations reached 3,034 vehicles in August, an increase of 110.5% compared with the same month last year. Since the beginning of the year, the increase is even reported to be 182%. Such signals are important for a production site in Germany because they provide greater certainty when planning output and logistics.
What this means for buyers
If Grünheide does move closer to 7,500 vehicles per week, the main practical benefits could be more stable availability and potentially shorter delivery times, depending on the model mix and export share. Grünheide is a key part of European production for the Tesla Model Y in particular.
At the same time, it remains to be seen how Tesla will support the ramp-up with further automation without compromising quality or increasing the amount of rework required. A faster cycle time boosts output, but only a well-controlled process can deliver sustainable output.
