Leapmotor D19 Takes Aim at Europe’s Luxury Segment
Until now, Leapmotor has attracted attention in Europe primarily with relatively affordable electric cars. The D19 takes a different direction: The 5.20-metre electric SUV offers three rows of seats, plenty of power and a particularly advanced high-voltage platform.
Following its launch in China, the flagship model is also expected to be offered in Europe. However, there is no confirmed launch date, detailed equipment specifications or pricing for Germany, Austria or Switzerland yet.

Despite its considerable weight, these performance figures put the D19 on a par with sports cars. For everyday use, however, the 1,000-volt architecture is likely to be more important, as it provides the technical basis for high charging rates and reduces the current required for the same power output.

Three Rows of Seats and Lounge-Style Equipment
Leapmotor is clearly prioritising comfort in the interior. The front seats are expected to offer a reclining function, massage and entertainment features. This positions the D19 less as a conventional family SUV and more as a large Chinese luxury model.
However, its dimensions come at a cost. At 5.20 metres long, the D19 will be more challenging to manoeuvre in European multi-storey car parks and city centres. In return, buyers who regularly need six or seven seats will get significantly more space than in a typical compact SUV.
The D19 is not simply a larger mass-market model, but Leapmotor’s attempt to combine advanced EV technology with luxury-class comfort.
Range Extender for Europe Still Uncertain
In China, the D19 is offered not only as a fully electric model but also with a range extender. In this configuration, an internal combustion engine does not drive the wheels directly; instead, it generates electricity for the electric powertrain and battery.
It is currently unclear whether this version will come to Europe. For a large and heavy SUV in particular, it could appeal to buyers who frequently travel very long distances. At the same time, consumption, emissions and regulatory classification in the DACH region—Germany, Austria and Switzerland—would play an important role.
European Pricing Will Be Crucial
Official European pricing has yet to be announced. Chinese list prices cannot be converted directly because of taxes, transport, type approval, distribution and differences in equipment. The only certainty is that the D19 is likely to be positioned considerably above Leapmotor’s existing affordable models.
This represents both an opportunity and a risk for the brand. Leapmotor is already growing strongly in the mass market, as shown by the latest Leapmotor EV sales figures. In the premium segment, however, it is not only the battery, power output and display size that matter, but also material quality, noise comfort, service and residual value.
A Technically Exciting Move Upmarket
On paper, the Leapmotor D19 has many of the ingredients needed to be a competitive electric flagship. The combination of a large battery, 1,000-volt technology, three rows of seats and around 540 kW is particularly compelling.
A robust assessment will have to wait until European range figures, the maximum charging rate, a detailed charging curve and pricing are available. If Leapmotor can deliver convincingly in these areas, the D19 could become an appealing alternative for buyers seeking luxury-class technology without a traditional premium badge.
