Chinese Automakers Are Shifting Production to Europe—Here’s Why

Chinese manufacturers such as BYD, Chery and Leapmotor plan to significantly expand production in Europe, partly through new plants and partly by using spare capacity at existing factories. A recent forecast projects around 90,000 vehicles built in Europe in 2026, rising to about 1 million by 2030 and approximately 1.5 million by 2035. The main drivers are EU rules on local value creation and tariffs on electric cars made in China, which could eventually be extended to hybrids.

Leapmotor B03 for Europe: Compact EV with 510 km of Range

Leapmotor has unveiled the A05 in China, which is set to be sold globally as the B03 and could eventually come to Europe. The compact hatchback combines a spacious interior within a length of 4.18 m with AI-powered infotainment and driver-assistance features. A preview of its technology comes from the B03X sibling SUV, already available to order in Germany with an LFP battery and DC charging at up to 133 kW.
