BYD Sealion 08 launches in China with 9-minute charging and 900 km of range

BYD is launching the Sealion 08 in China, a new flagship SUV in its Ocean series, available as either a BEV or a DM-i plug-in hybrid. Highlights include flash-charging times from 10% to 97% in 9 minutes and up to 900 km of CLTC range. It also features air suspension, rear-wheel steering, and an extensive suite of displays and driver-assistance systems.

BYD Sealion 08: New Ocean flagship with flash charging

BYD is expanding its Ocean model family with a new flagship SUV: the Sealion 08. The model is launching first in China and will be available both as a BEV (fully electric vehicle) and a DM-i plug-in hybrid. Depending on the version, the Sealion 08 is priced between 229,900 and 279,900 yuan, with 5- and 6-seat configurations also available.

For buyers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, this is primarily a preview of what may be to come: BYD is clearly expanding the Ocean series upmarket, into precisely the segment where competition among family SUVs is particularly fierce in these countries. Whether and when the Sealion 08 will come to Europe has yet to be decided, but its specifications provide a fairly clear indication of the direction in which BYD is taking its next wave of premium models.

Size and platform focus: midsize to large SUV

The Sealion 08 falls into the “midsize to large” category and is correspondingly substantial: 5,115 mm long, 1,999 mm wide, and 1,800 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,030 mm. BYD describes it as a new design approach within the Ocean line (“Ocean Aesthetics 2.0”).

With dimensions like these, everyday concerns are less about highway driving and more about navigating cities. It is therefore noteworthy that BYD has equipped the Sealion 08 with technology designed to make maneuvering easier.

Flash charging and Blade Battery 2.0: 10% to 97% in 9 minutes

BYD is equipping all versions with its second-generation Blade Battery and proprietary flash-charging technology. According to the manufacturer, this enables charging from 10% to 70% in 5 minutes and from 10% to 97% in 9 minutes.

For everyday use in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, it is important to put these figures into context: such charging times always depend on certain conditions, including access to a suitable high-power charging station, a preconditioned battery within the correct temperature range, and a charging curve suited to the battery. Nevertheless, the Sealion 08 shows how aggressively BYD intends to position “short charging stops” in the premium segment—similar to the 800-volt trend, but using BYD’s own approach. Range and batteries: BEV with up to 900 km (CLTC), PHEV with 55.8 kWh

For the BEV, BYD quotes a range of 900 km (rear-wheel drive) or 800 km (all-wheel drive), depending on the powertrain, under China’s CLTC test cycle. Battery capacity is listed as 115.072 kWh. As always, CLTC figures are generally significantly higher than European WLTP figures in real-world terms. Even so, the combination of a large battery and an efficiency-focused design suggests that the vehicle will be capable of covering very long distances.

The DM-i plug-in hybrid has a 55.843 kWh battery. BYD quotes an electric CLTC range of 400 km with rear-wheel drive or 350 km with all-wheel drive. Total range is stated as up to 1,650 km with a full fuel tank and fully charged battery. Fuel consumption with a depleted battery is claimed to be 4.6 liters/100 km under the NEDC test cycle. For Europe, however, subsequent WLTP certification would be essential for meaningful comparisons.

Powertrain and chassis: plenty of power, air suspension, and rear-wheel steering

For the electric powertrain, BYD quotes a maximum output of 370 kW for the rear-wheel-drive model. The all-wheel-drive model combines 215 kW at the front with 370 kW at the rear. Figures like these are clearly intended to provide effortless reserves for highway driving and overtaking, rather than merely impressive acceleration times.

More relevant to everyday driving, however, are the chassis features. The Sealion 08 gets the DiSus-A system for intelligent body control, dual-chamber air suspension, and active rear-wheel steering. BYD quotes a turning radius of 4.95 m. Particularly in a 5.1-meter SUV, this could make the difference between tight parking garages and urban U-turns being frustrating or straightforward.

Driver assistance and cockpit: “God’s Eye B” plus large screens

For its driver-assistance systems, BYD uses God’s Eye B (God’s Eye 5.0). Supported features are expected to include navigation-assisted driving in cities and several automated parking functions. For Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, one point would be particularly important: the scope and approval of driver-assistance functions depend heavily on local legislation and EU type approval.

Inside, BYD emphasizes screen space, with a 17.3-inch central display, a 26-inch augmented-reality head-up display, and a 21.4-inch rear entertainment screen. For the 5-seat version, BYD quotes 943 liters of cargo capacity and a powered 201-liter front trunk.

Market context: BYD pushes Ocean further into the premium segment

The Sealion 08 is positioned as the second Ocean flagship after the Seal 08 sedan and is intended to strengthen BYD’s presence in the upper price segment, alongside sub-brands such as Denza. In China, the model enters an extremely crowded family-SUV market that includes numerous Chinese competitors focused on 800-volt architectures and software.

For Europe, this means that BYD will expand its portfolio not only at the entry level, but also further upmarket. If you are interested in BYD’s premium strategy, it is also worth looking at the Denza N8, which is likewise drawing attention with its Blade Battery and fast-charging capability.

Key message

The BYD Sealion 08 shows how strongly BYD intends to differentiate its premium SUVs through fast charging, advanced chassis features, and driver-assistance functions—not just range.

Peugeot 308 as a Fastback Coupé-SUV: What’s Behind It

Peugeot is apparently considering a major change in direction for the next 308: away from the classic hatchback and toward a fastback styled as a coupé-SUV. The future generation is expected to be based on Stellantis’ new STLA One platform, which is primarily optimized for electric powertrains. However, based on current information, a market launch would not be realistic until late 2029 at the earliest.
