BMW iX3 reaches 100,000 orders in Europe

The new BMW iX3 is emerging as a key driving force for the Munich-based automaker’s electric model range. Since its unveiling, it has already recorded 100,000 orders in Europe. No other BMW model has achieved a comparable order intake in its first year of availability.

This also marks a remarkable market debut for Neue Klasse, BMW’s next-generation electric vehicle architecture. The iX3 is its first production model and must therefore prove that the major investments in the platform, production and digital vehicle technology will pay off.

With 100,000 European orders, the iX3 is not only a successful electric SUV but also a crucial launch for Neue Klasse.

Key figures for the BMW iX3

MetricResult
Orders in Europe100,000
Share of BMW’s EV orders in Europearound one-third
EV share within the X3 familyaround 50%
Demand in ChinaStrong interest, but no specific figure yet

The distribution within the X3 range is particularly striking. Around every second order is now for the electric version. For a model that continues to be offered with other powertrains as well, this is a strong signal in favor of electric vehicles.

Orders are not yet deliveries

The record figure initially refers to orders received, not the number of vehicles already delivered. Nevertheless, orders are an important early indicator of demand, production planning and plant utilization. The key questions now are how quickly BMW can work through its order backlog and whether demand will remain at this level.

The market launch reflects the model’s strong overall performance. The iX3 quickly secured a leading position in the EV ranking for Western Europe. It also performs well in terms of efficiency, as shown by the highway efficiency test featuring the BMW iX3.

Neue Klasse set to expand rapidly to additional models

BMW does not view Neue Klasse as a single vehicle project, but as the technological foundation for a large part of its future portfolio. By the end of 2027, a total of 40 new or updated models are expected to be launched featuring technologies from this generation.

Not all of these vehicles will necessarily be fully electric models based on the same platform. Individual technology components are also set to be introduced in models with combustion engines or plug-in hybrid powertrains. BMW is therefore maintaining its strategy of offering several powertrain types in parallel.

The i3 is next in line as the new generation’s fully electric model. Orders are scheduled to open at the end of the month. A long-wheelbase version is also planned for China, whose cockpit and Neue Klasse technology already provide a concrete preview of the upcoming sedan.

Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly important for BMW

The core BMW brand most recently delivered nearly 2.17 million vehicles worldwide. Of these, 336,000 were fully electric, equivalent to a share of around 15.5%. The iX3’s European order figures are therefore well above the brand’s previous global EV share.

However, the two figures are not directly comparable. The iX3 figure covers European orders, while the company figures refer to worldwide deliveries across the entire model range. Nevertheless, the scale demonstrates how quickly an appealing electric SUV can shift the powertrain mix.

What the record-breaking launch means for BMW

The iX3 provides BMW with compelling evidence that Neue Klasse is gaining traction in the market. A single model accounts for one-third of the company’s European EV orders, while the electric X3 has achieved a share of around 50% within its model range. This gives BMW a solid foundation for its upcoming model launches.

Even so, the manufacturer is maintaining a broad powertrain mix comprising electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, combustion-engine vehicles and, in the future, hydrogen-powered vehicles. However, the iX3 makes it quite clear which part of this strategy is currently generating the greatest momentum.
