Xpeng G9L Launches in China, Europe Could Follow
With the G9L, Xpeng is previewing a new flagship SUV that is expected to go on sale in China within the next few weeks. Whether and when the model will come to Europe remains unclear, but the brand has repeatedly shown in the past that it also plans to export its more powerful model lines. This would be particularly interesting for the DACH region—Germany, Austria, and Switzerland—because although large SUVs are in demand there, efficiency and everyday practicality now matter just as much as battery size alone.
Range and Consumption: Xpeng Reports Very Strong Test Figures
Xpeng is apparently pursuing two approaches with the G9L: an all-electric version and an EREV variant—an extended-range electric vehicle—with a range extender. For the latter, the manufacturer cites an in-house test in which it achieved a total range of 1,403 km, with combined consumption of 3.2 kWh and 4.5 liters. This is classic range-extender thinking: drive electrically, but carry an internal combustion engine that acts as a generator on long journeys, reducing range anxiety.
The all-electric version is also said to have covered a long distance in the manufacturer’s test. Xpeng reports 823 km on a single battery charge at an ambient temperature of nearly 39 °C, with consumption of 11 kWh, equating to 122% of the stated range according to Xpeng. Such figures send a strong signal, but they should be viewed objectively: they are manufacturer figures from specially designed tests, not independent WLTP measurements or results from a neutral highway driving profile.
What This Could Mean in Everyday Use
Regardless of whether these exact figures can be replicated in everyday use, the overall direction highlights something important: large vehicles do not automatically need ever-larger batteries. If the aerodynamics, drivetrain, and thermal management are right, efficiency can improve noticeably, directly affecting charging stops, costs, and long-distance comfort.

Another aspect is at least as interesting: Xpeng promises the large SUV a level of maneuverability more typical of a small car. In its own comparison video, the company quotes a turning radius of 5.40 m, which would allow the G9L to turn more tightly than a current Mini and make it significantly more maneuverable than a Tesla Model Y.
According to Xpeng, this is made possible by standard rear-wheel steering, which is said to use a ±15° steer-by-wire system. Especially in tight parking garages, when making a U-turn, or in historic city centers, this can make a real difference: less maneuvering, less stress, and greater “city capability” despite the SUV format.
Assessment: An Exciting Proposition, but No Verdict for Europe Yet
All in all, the Xpeng G9L sounds like a model that addresses two current pain points: hassle-free range and everyday maneuverability.
