Toyota bZ5 (2027) in China: More Assistance, More Pressure on Pricing

Toyota has refreshed the bZ5 in China for the 2027 model year. It is the first annual update for the electric coupe-SUV, around 14 months after its market launch. The core of the update is not the powertrain, but the software underpinning its driver-assistance and “smart” features.

The reason is clear: Competition in China’s EV market moves at a blistering pace, both on pricing and driver-assistance systems. Toyota is therefore responding with an upgraded assistance package and a substantial limited-time price reduction.

Prices and Promotions: Up to 20,000 Yuan Less

The model remains available in six variants. Official list prices are still 129,800 to 199,800 yuan. At launch, a limited-time promotion is also offering prices of 109,800 to 179,800 yuan, representing a reduction of 20,000 yuan in each case.

According to the provider, the reduction consists of a cash bonus and a trade-in bonus. Additional benefits include interest-free financing, a lifetime warranty on the battery, electric motor, and power electronics for the first owner, as well as a free wallbox, all subject to local terms and conditions in China.

The Main Upgrade: Toyota Pilot with Momenta 6.0

The most important technical update is found in the driver-assistance system: “Toyota Pilot” is being upgraded to Momenta 6.0. The platform is based on a reinforcement-learning foundation model (R6) from Chinese provider Momenta.

For everyday use, the version number matters less than the range of functions: Among other things, the system supports navigation-assisted driving in urban areas. In a market such as China, where many manufacturers are heavily promoting urban assistance functions, this is an important step for Toyota to remain competitive on technology.

Toyota says the system uses a chip with 544 TOPS of computing power. For context, figures like this primarily indicate the ability to process multiple sensor streams and AI models in parallel, including object detection, lane and route planning, and context-sensitive behavior in complex scenarios.

Perspective for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland

The bZ5 in this form is not currently offered as a production model in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. The update is nevertheless noteworthy because it shows how heavily Western manufacturers in China now rely on local technology partners to develop and scale driver-assistance functions quickly.

Dimensions and Interior: Large Display, JBL, and 50 W Wireless Charging

The dimensions remain unchanged: The bZ5 is 4,780 mm long, 1,866 mm wide, and 1,510 mm tall, with a 2,880 mm wheelbase. The interior features a 15.6-inch central display, 10 JBL speakers, and 50 W wireless fast charging.

Powertrain and Battery: 200 kW at the Front, BYD LFP “Blade Battery”

The powertrain remains unchanged: a front-mounted electric motor with a peak output of 200 kW. For its batteries in China, Toyota continues to use BYD as its supplier, specifically the LFP “Blade Battery”.

Two battery sizes are available: 65.28 kWh and 73.98 kWh. The stated ranges are 550 km and 630 km, respectively, under CLTC, the Chinese test cycle. Experience shows that CLTC figures are considerably more optimistic than WLTP figures, so these values are most useful for comparisons within the Chinese market.

For context on LFP: In China, LFP has long been the dominant standard because of its advantages in cost, cycle life, and supply chains. On that topic: China’s Battery Market: LFP Hits 84.6% and Squeezes NMC.

Why Toyota Is Updating the bZ5: Recent Demand Has Been Weak

Toyota positioned the bZ5 as an important model for China in 2025, intended to compete with local manufacturers on price and technology. However, demand fell short of expectations: Most recently, Chinese retail sales in July fell sharply year over year to 529 units.

That is precisely why the combination of an ADAS upgrade and a pricing promotion makes sense. In China, purchasing decisions often depend on the overall package of driver assistance, infotainment, software update cadence, and price rather than on motor output alone.

The Technology Strategy Behind It: IT’S TiME 4.0

At the same time, Toyota has announced a technology framework for China called IT’S TiME 4.0, intended to support electrified and “intelligent” products. This suggests a platform-based approach: Software, driver assistance, and digital features are increasingly being treated as a system that can be rolled out across multiple models.

For Toyota, this is an important tool for delivering updates faster and more consistently, similar to the advantage Tesla has leveraged for years. In China in particular, this pace has now become essential.
