Tesla Robotaxi Could Offer Ride Credits for Referrals

Tesla is apparently preparing a referral program for its Robotaxi service. References in the app’s code suggest rewards for referring users and an improved lost-and-found feature, although a launch has not been confirmed.

Tesla Robotaxi App Hints at New Referral Program

Tesla could eventually promote its Robotaxi service with an integrated referral program. References to a feature called “Refer and Earn” have been discovered in version 26.8.0 of the Robotaxi app.

The concept is likely to be familiar: Existing passengers invite new users and receive a reward in return. Ride credits or discounted Robotaxi trips would be obvious possibilities, but the references do not reveal the type or value of any potential reward.

The feature is apparently under development. Its presence in the app’s code does not confirm that it will ultimately launch.

Why Referrals Could Work Well for Robotaxis

Tesla has used referral programs for years, including for vehicles and energy products. The barrier to entry is significantly lower with Robotaxi: Instead of buying a car, users may only need to register and then take a ride.

That is precisely why small credits could create a strong network effect. Invitation sent → new user tries the service → both parties may receive a benefit. For Tesla, this would be a relatively direct way to increase utilization and awareness of the service.

The program would also fit the company’s long-term software strategy. With Full Self-Driving (FSD) and the Robotaxi platform, Tesla is developing not only the driving technology but also a digital ecosystem for booking, access, and use.

New QR Code-Based Lost-and-Found Feature

The analyzed app version also contains references to an expanded process for lost items. This could include a dedicated recovery request through which passengers can report forgotten belongings and arrange their return.

A QR code feature could help verify the identity of the person collecting an item. This is particularly relevant for a driverless service because there is no human driver available as a direct point of contact.

Potential Benefits

  • Structured reporting of lost items directly in the app
  • More secure handover through digital identity verification
  • Less manual work for support and fleet operations

App Code Provides Clues but Does Not Guarantee a Launch

Caution is warranted with findings of this kind. Developers often add features long before release, test multiple versions, or remove them entirely. Tesla could also change the names, terms, and rewards before any potential launch.

It therefore remains unclear when the referral program might become available and what requirements would apply. Rewards might be granted only after a referred user’s first paid ride, for example, or the program could be limited to certain regions or offered as a temporary trial.

Still a Distant Prospect for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland

For users in the DACH region—Germany, Austria, and Switzerland—the references are primarily of strategic significance for now. Tesla has not yet announced a publicly bookable Robotaxi service there, and the approval processes and regulations for automated ride services differ considerably from those in the North American market.

However, other systems show how quickly autonomous driving features are evolving. Competitors are also demonstrating increasingly complex maneuvers, including autonomous driving without clear road markings.

If Tesla later expands its Robotaxi service to additional markets, referral rewards and a well-designed lost-and-found system would be important components. Above all, the latest code discovery shows that, alongside the driving technology, Tesla is also preparing the day-to-day processes required for a driverless mobility service.
