Tesla FSD: Why These “Hands-Off” Videos Are Extremely Dangerous

More and more clips are appearing on TikTok, Instagram and X showing Tesla drivers clearly no longer paying attention while FSD is active—from sleeping to working on a laptop. This is not only illegal, but also undermines the concept of “FSD (Supervised)” and increases the pressure on Tesla to further tighten its monitoring and communication.

A social media trend that paints a misleading picture of FSD

Videos are increasingly circulating on social media showing Tesla drivers doing things while driver assistance is active that have no place on the road: sleeping, playing with a controller, typing emails on a laptop or watching videos. The clips are often presented as “look what my Tesla can do,” and that is precisely the problem: They imply autonomy even though Tesla explicitly positions its system as FSD (Supervised).

Important context for the DACH region—Germany, Austria and Switzerland: Although many of these videos come from the US, the basic principle is the same here. As long as a system has not been approved as fully autonomous, the person behind the wheel remains legally responsible and must be ready to intervene at any time. Anyone who films themselves not paying attention may also be documenting their own violation of the law.

What Tesla actually means by “FSD (Supervised)”

Tesla makes clear in its own guidance that the currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous. In everyday use, that means keeping your hands within reach, your eyes on the road and being ready to take over at any time. This applies regardless of how smoothly the system happens to be driving.

This is exactly where the social media narrative falls apart: The deciding question is not “Did the car stay in its lane?” but “Was the driver attentive and ready to take over?” Anyone who becomes distracted or even falls asleep while driving is acting with gross negligence under virtually any legal system.

Driver monitoring: From steering-wheel torque to an interior camera—and still possible to circumvent?

Tesla relies on a combination of steering-wheel interaction and an increasingly strict interior camera that monitors the driver’s eyes and attention. Repeated inattention results in warnings and, in practice, temporary feature lockouts. Over the course of 2026, camera-based monitoring became noticeably stricter in many places, in some cases including additional checks before activation.

At the same time, an unpleasant game of cat and mouse can be observed online: Some users boast about having fooled the monitoring system. Methods circulating include manipulating steering-wheel input or covering the camera. Workarounds are also promoted to bypass software restrictions, such as limits on video playback while driving. This is not only risky, but may also affect the warranty, insurance coverage and vehicle approval.

Legally, it remains simple even if the technology is complex

Most of the clips show behavior that could be considered distraction, inattention or reckless driving. Even if an assistance system appears stable over longer distances, the driver remains the person operating the vehicle. Anyone who promotes “hands-off” driving as a lifestyle exposes other road users to unnecessary danger.

FSD may improve, but responsibility still remains with the human as long as it is “supervised.”

Why this is more than just a driver problem for Tesla

It would be easy to dismiss all of this as isolated incidents. However, the volume of such content can influence public perception, regulatory scrutiny and legal disputes. Especially because Tesla’s assistance systems are under scrutiny from authorities and courts in various markets, viral “I can do anything while driving” clips act like fuel on the fire.

From Tesla’s perspective, several issues converge here: the product name and the expectations it creates, the impact of marketing, misuse by individual users and the question of how robust a system must be against deliberate circumvention. In practice, this will very likely lead to one outcome: even stricter monitoring and less room for “gray areas.”

What drivers should take away from this now

  • Always treat FSD and Autopilot as driver assistance, not autonomy.
  • If the system demands attention, respond immediately rather than trying to “fool” it.
  • Do not make video or “video-in-motion” modifications that override safety mechanisms.
  • If you want range or efficiency benefits, you achieve them through anticipatory driving, not distraction.

Assessment from a Tesla perspective

FSD is technologically exciting and can reduce the burden of everyday driving, especially during monotonous portions of a journey. That is exactly why responsible use is so important: Misuse destroys trust, provides ammunition for blanket bans and makes it more likely that features will be restricted for everyone.
