Nio Plans Investment in Embodied AI Startup Founded by One of Its Own Executives
According to a report, Nio plans to make a strategic investment in a startup focused on physical AI and embodied intelligence. What makes this unusual is that the new company was reportedly founded by Ren Shaoqing, Nio’s Senior Vice President responsible for smart-driving research and development.
Despite founding the company, Ren is expected to continue leading Nio’s smart-driving organization. Nio is thus attempting to achieve two goals at once: maintain stability within its driver-assistance team and stay close to one of the hottest fields in AI without having to build its own robotics division from scratch.
Why “Embodied AI” Is of Interest to Automakers
Embodied intelligence refers to AI systems that do not merely “think” but also act in a physical environment, such as robots, autonomous machines or other mechatronic systems. Technically, there is considerable overlap with automated driving: perception, prediction, planning, control and reinforcement learning are fundamental building blocks in both fields.
This is attractive to automakers because expertise, data and training methods can be transferred to some extent. At the same time, moving from advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and automated driving into robotics is a very different proposition commercially and organizationally. This is precisely where the “external startup, OEM as strategic investor” model comes in.
Ren Remains Smart-Driving Chief, but How He Divides His Time Will Be Crucial
Nio CEO William Li reportedly explained the strategy at an internal employee meeting: Ren will remain responsible for Nio’s smart-driving operations. Organizational changes were apparently not discussed at that stage.
However, it remains unclear how Ren will divide his time between Nio and the new company once the startup begins to grow. This is the central risk of such an arrangement: a key executive is suddenly no longer exclusively committed to the automaker, even if his operational mandate at Nio remains unchanged.
Technical Background: Nio’s Shift to End-to-End Systems and World Models
Ren has been with Nio since 2020 and has helped shape the company’s technological direction in smart driving. According to the report, Nio has moved its algorithms away from a traditionally modular approach and increasingly toward end-to-end systems and world-model architectures. The aim is not merely to “recognize” individual objects in the environment, but to build a consistent, model-based understanding of the world that enables more robust decisions.
Nio has also relied heavily on in-house hardware development: its Shenji NX9031 chip is said to be in series production. In parts of its vehicle portfolio, Nio has reportedly replaced a configuration using four Nvidia Orin chips with a single NX9031. For customers, this could eventually mean equivalent or better driver-assistance functions on a more efficient computing platform, with implications for thermal management, costs and software-update rollouts.
Nio World Model: Large-Scale Rollout
According to the report, Nio has been working on a world model since 2023, unveiled it in 2024 and began deploying it to production vehicles in 2025. An update in June is said to have already reached more than 700,000 users. The report also mentions a framework that combines a world model, supervised fine-tuning and closed-loop reinforcement learning.
This demonstrates how closely smart driving is now linked to generative foundation-model methods and large-scale training pipelines. Embodied AI can benefit directly from these advances, for example when robots operating in unstructured environments need to “understand” what the most appropriate next action is.
Market Trend: Automakers and Robotics Are Converging
The news fits into a broader trend: autonomous driving and robotics are increasingly drawing from the same talent pool. Executives with experience in series production, safety processes and real-world data operations are attractive to investors because they have already demonstrated their ability to turn laboratory technology into scalable products.
For comparison, it recently emerged that another Chinese manufacturer is advancing the funding of its robotics subsidiary at a high valuation. Nio’s approach is different: rather than a spun-off corporate subsidiary, it involves an independent company in which Nio is making a strategic investment.
What It Means for Germany, Austria and Switzerland
For the DACH market—Germany, Austria and Switzerland—this is less about an imminent new feature and more a signal of how strongly Chinese development budgets are shifting toward AI platforms. Whether and when this will result in specific new functions for Nio’s European vehicle portfolio remains unclear, as no details have been provided about the size of the investment, the startup’s valuation or any specific joint projects.
Nevertheless, the core strategy is noteworthy: if smart driving and robotics truly share a common technology base, an automaker can use an investment to gain access to new model architectures, training methods or toolchains without immediately having to build an entire robotics program in-house.
