MG2 from 2027: Technology Rather Than Rock-Bottom Pricing

MG is planning an electric subcompact positioned below the MG4 for 2027, although its final name has yet to be decided. The potential MG2 is intended to stand out through distinctive design, modern battery technology and European production rather than simply offering the lowest possible price.

MG2 set to fill the gap at the lower end of MG’s electric range in 2027

MG plans to expand its EV lineup in 2027 with a compact subcompact positioned below the MG4. MG2 is one possible name, while the MG GO concept has already provided an initial preview of the intended direction. However, the final model name has not yet been confirmed.

The new EV is not intended to simply become the cheapest car in its class. MG apparently wants to focus more heavily on design, driving enjoyment and technology. This would mark a departure from the brand’s previous strategy, in which an attractive price was often more important than maximum range or particularly fast charging.

The MG2 is not intended to be a characterless budget EV, but a modern subcompact with serious technological ambitions.

Renault 5 and VW ID. Polo are the main rivals

In the European market, the MG2 will face rapidly growing competition. Its rivals include the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric and the announced VW ID. Polo. Chinese manufacturers are also increasing the pressure, for example with the Leapmotor B03 for Europe and the planned Geely E2.

An entry-level price significantly below 20,000 euros currently appears unlikely for the MG2. Based on current information, the base model is expected to cost at least around 20,000 euros, with better-equipped versions priced accordingly higher. For the DACH region—Germany, Austria and Switzerland—the key factors will be the standard equipment offered by MG and whether regional incentives reduce the actual purchase price.

Semi-solid-state battery could provide a technological advantage

The potential battery technology is particularly intriguing. MG is considering a semi-solid-state battery for the subcompact. This technology represents an intermediate step between today’s lithium-ion batteries with liquid electrolytes and fully solid-state cells.

Such batteries can offer higher energy density, providing more range within the same installation space. They may also offer advantages in terms of safety and temperature performance. However, the actual benefits in the MG2 will depend on the cell chemistry, cooling, software and usable capacity.

Specific production figures have not yet been confirmed. In the fiercely competitive subcompact segment, however, more than 400 km of range and consistently high DC charging power across the relevant charging window would be important targets. A brief peak figure alone is not enough; what matters is a stable charging curve that also saves time on longer journeys.

European production could stabilize prices

MG is also considering production in Europe. This would offer the brand two major benefits: shorter supply chains could simplify logistics, while vehicles produced in Europe would not be subject to the EU’s additional tariffs on electric cars built in China.

Whether and where the MG2 will be produced remains undecided. European production could, however, help MG combine competitive prices with positioning tailored more closely to European customers. This aligns with the aim of reconnecting the brand’s British heritage more visibly with the technology of its Chinese parent company, SAIC.

Why the concept matters to MG

The MG2 could demonstrate whether MG can evolve from a price-focused alternative into a distinctive EV brand. At the very least, the sporty styling of the MG GO concept suggests that the production car is intended to have more emotional appeal than many restrained entry-level models.

Until the planned market launch in 2027, however, the battery, range, charging power, production location and price all remain provisional. If MG succeeds in delivering a compelling combination of compact dimensions, modern cell technology and a charging curve suited to European driving conditions, the MG2 is likely to stand out in the electric subcompact segment for much more than its price alone.
