Geely EX5 gains plenty of space under the hood
Geely is preparing a comprehensively revised EX5 in China. One of the most visible innovations is under the hood: a large frunk that can carry up to 50 kg.
Geely has not yet disclosed its exact capacity. For comparison, the smaller Geely E2 offers a 70-liter frunk. Given the EX5’s larger body, its storage compartment is likely to be even more spacious, although a confirmed figure in liters is not yet available.
Rear-wheel drive creates space and boosts performance
The additional storage space points to a fundamental technical redesign. The electric motor is now mounted on the rear axle, while the charging port has moved from the front fender to the rear section of the vehicle.
The new rear motor produces 245 kW. The top speed also rises significantly, from the previous 175 km/h to as much as 201 km/h. That is more than sufficient for a family-oriented electric SUV and underlines that Geely is doing more than simply refreshing the EX5’s appearance.

Energy storage will continue to be provided by an LFP, or lithium iron phosphate, battery. Its capacity, range and maximum charging power are not yet known. LFP now dominates large parts of the Chinese market, as developments in the Chinese battery mix show.
LiDAR and additional cameras for G-Pilot H5
A LiDAR sensor is mounted on the roof, supplemented by cameras in the front fenders and roof spoiler. The sensors are part of the G-Pilot H5 driver-assistance system, which is intended to support automated navigation functions on highways and in Chinese urban traffic.
However, this does not make the EX5 a fully autonomous vehicle. The driver remains responsible and must monitor the system. Whether Geely will later be able to offer all functions in the DACH region—Germany, Austria and Switzerland—depends on regulatory approval, map data and local software.
Familiar design, new technology underneath
Geely is taking a cautious approach to the exterior. New bumpers and partially flush door handles modernize the appearance without completely redesigning the EX5. Under the bodywork, however, the structure, electronics and key components have been extensively revised.
The new EX5 is an evolution visually, but a much more substantial upgrade technically.
The Chinese market launch is expected in September 2026, with September 21 cited as the date. The update comes at the right time: 40,776 vehicles were delivered in China from January through August 2026, around 45.9% fewer than in the same period of the previous year.
Neither a launch date nor final specifications have yet been confirmed for Europe. However, Geely is visibly expanding its international electric vehicle lineup. The Geely Galaxy TT with 800-volt technology also demonstrates how quickly the brand is developing its platforms and drivetrains.
