Tesla sets a date for the new Roadster
After several delays, the Tesla Roadster now has a firm date for its next major presentation. Tesla plans to unveil the electric supercar on October 1, 2026, in Waco, Texas.
Due to the time difference, the event will begin at 2:30 a.m. on October 2 in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. A countdown is running on the official Roadster page, and Tesla is also sending digital invitations to early reservation holders.
Tickets are nontransferable and are valid only for guests aged 21 and older. A public broadcast has not yet been confirmed, but given the international interest, a livestream would be an obvious choice.
The teaser once again hints at cold-gas thrusters
The darkened preview image shows an angular rear end, a prominent aerodynamic wing, and four bright gas plumes. Tesla is once again referencing the idea of an optional SpaceX package featuring cold-gas thrusters.
These thrusters briefly generate additional thrust by releasing stored gas in a controlled manner. In a car, they could theoretically assist with acceleration or vehicle control. It remains unclear how Tesla would make the system technically safe and whether it could receive approval for road use worldwide.
The presentation may demonstrate spectacular features, but what will matter afterward are production-ready specifications and a credible production plan.
Extreme acceleration remains a development target for now
For years, Tesla has promised exceptional performance figures for the Roadster. The standard version is expected to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than two seconds. With the optional SpaceX package, Tesla has even hinted at a time of under one second and briefly lifting off the road.

The stated acceleration figures should therefore not yet be considered final production specifications. A reliable assessment will require confirmed data on the battery, range, charging power, weight, and production volumes, among other details.
Almost nine years since the first presentation
Tesla first presented the second-generation Roadster in November 2017. At the time, the sports car made a surprise appearance during the unveiling of the Tesla Semi, after which the project was delayed several times.
According to members of Tesla’s leadership team, the Roadster is now undergoing active testing. In 2026 alone, several possible presentation dates came and went before Tesla finally settled on October.
For reservation holders, the official invitation is therefore an important signal. While it does not prove that production is about to begin, it shows that Tesla is once again visibly prioritizing the long-delayed halo project.
The Roadster’s role in Tesla’s portfolio
The Roadster is not intended to be a high-volume model, but rather a technological showcase demonstrating what is possible with a battery-electric powertrain. Unlike the large Tesla Model S sedan or the premium Tesla Model X SUV, it is designed from the outset as a low-slung, high-performance sports car.
Its direct impact on the European mass market will therefore be limited. Nevertheless, technologies developed for the project could eventually find their way into other Tesla models, including advances in powertrains, thermal management, lightweight construction, or vehicle-dynamics software.
Assessment of the Roadster unveiling
The firm event date and invitations make the Roadster’s return much more concrete. The key question will be whether Tesla presents a near-production vehicle in October and, for the first time, provides credible details on price, range, and the start of production.
Until then, the spectacular acceleration promises should be regarded as development targets. If Tesla delivers a convincing live demonstration backed by clear technical data, the Roadster could nevertheless achieve exactly the effect for which it was designed: maximum attention for electric performance.
