Audi A2 e-tron: 649 km Meets Familiar Technology

The Audi A2 e-tron combines a range of up to 649 km with proven MEB technology and distinctive retro styling. However, the compact EV does not set new standards for fast charging or controls.

Audi A2 e-tron Prioritizes Range Over Record-Breaking Charging

With the A2 e-tron, Audi is positioning a compact EV for European customers. Its distinctive design clearly draws on the idea behind the earlier A2, while proven technology from the Volkswagen Group operates beneath the bodywork.

The MEB platform serves as the technical basis. That is not inherently a disadvantage, as the architecture is proven, widely used and makes efficient use of space possible. However, anyone expecting a clear technological leap from a new Audi may want to take a closer look at its charging performance and control concept.

Up to 649 km of Range for the Audi A2 e-tron

The A2 e-tron’s greatest strength is its efficiency. For the version with the longest range, Audi quotes up to 649 km and energy consumption of 13.9 kWh/100 km. This puts the model at the upper end of what MEB technology currently allows.

The particularly low figure of 12.8 kWh/100 km therefore does not apply to the model with the maximum range, but to the version with the 61 kWh battery and additional efficiency package. Even so, 13.9 kWh/100 km is still an impressive figure on paper for a practical electric car.

However, this range is not unique within the Group. A corresponding version of the VW ID.3 is expected to achieve up to 629 km, while Audi quotes an additional 20 km for the A2 e-tron. The Skoda Elroq, a taller compact SUV, achieves up to 565 km.

Fast Charging Remains at Familiar MEB Levels

When charging with direct current, the large-battery version of the A2 e-tron reaches a peak of just over 180 kW. Audi quotes 29 minutes for a fast-charging session. That puts the model roughly on par with current MEB vehicles, but it does not set a new class record.

For everyday use, a half-hour charging break on a long journey remains perfectly practical. In any case, the briefly achieved peak figure is not the only decisive factor; the charging curve should also remain as stable as possible. Compared with modern 800-volt electric cars, however, the A2 e-tron lacks a technological wow factor at charging stops.

Curved Display With Noticeable Screen Bezels

Inside, Audi uses a curved display concept that visually resembles the brand’s larger models. However, the wide black areas surrounding the digital instrument cluster and central touchscreen are conspicuous. As a result, the visible display area appears smaller than the wide housing initially suggests.

Whether the bezel is distracting is partly a matter of personal taste. In the premium segment, however, it can quickly create the impression of unused space, especially when competitors integrate their displays with virtually no bezels. The promised higher-quality materials and generous interior space could make this less significant in everyday use.

A Solid Audi, but No Technological Leap

The Audi A2 e-tron is by no means technically weak. Its long range, low energy consumption and established platform add up to a coherent overall package for commuters and long-distance drivers. The combination of a compact body and up to 649 km of range is likely to appeal to many prospective buyers in particular.

When it comes to charging and the cockpit, however, Audi remains closer to the Volkswagen Group’s familiar standard than its premium positioning might suggest. The A2 e-tron must therefore win buyers over primarily through efficiency, interior space, build quality and design. Whether that is enough to justify the asking price will ultimately be shown by direct comparisons with less expensive MEB models.
