VW ID. UNYX 09 to Launch on September 24
Volkswagen Anhui has announced the premiere of the ID. UNYX 09 for September 24, 2026. The start of production for the electric coupe sedan is also set to be celebrated at the event. An accompanying reference to pre-sales suggests that VW may begin accepting initial orders during the presentation.
Following the ID. UNYX 08 SUV, the ID. UNYX 09 is the second model jointly developed by Volkswagen and Xpeng in around two years. The vehicle has already completed the key regulatory approval process for the Chinese market.
At more than five meters long, the ID. UNYX 09 is not a compact sedan but a premium electric model clearly tailored to the Chinese market.
More Than Five Meters Long and Up to 370 kW
Volkswagen describes the ID. UNYX 09 in China as an electric B-segment model. This classification should not be confused with the European subcompact segment: At 5.08 meters long and with a wheelbase of 3.03 meters, the five-seater is clearly positioned in a much larger vehicle class.
Rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions will be available. According to registration documents, both variants have a top speed of 200 km/h.
| Specification | Rear-Wheel Drive | All-Wheel Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Drivetrain | One rear electric motor | One electric motor at the front and one at the rear |
| Power | 230 kW | 370 kW combined output |
| Top speed | 200 km/h | 200 km/h |
| Battery chemistry | LFP | LFP |
| Battery cells | CATL | CATL |
The body measures 1.98 meters wide and 1.51 meters tall. A long hood, a full-width light bar and crystal-inspired headlights are intended to clearly distinguish the ID. UNYX 09 from the globally available ID. models.
CATL LFP Battery, Range Yet to Be Confirmed
Both drivetrain variants use lithium iron phosphate cells from CATL. LFP batteries are considered robust, comparatively inexpensive and thermally stable, but they usually have a lower energy density than nickel-rich cell chemistries.
Volkswagen has not yet confirmed full details on usable battery capacity, charging power or official range ahead of the premiere. There has already been earlier information about the ID. UNYX 09 covering these points, but the final configuration will not be known until the unveiling.
VLA System Combines Camera Data and Language
Digital technology is a major focus. The ID. UNYX 09 will feature VLA-based driver assistance and an AI assistant. VLA stands for Vision, Language and Action: The system is designed to capture visual information, process its context through language and derive appropriate vehicle actions from it.
That sounds like a major step forward, but it should still be classified as driver assistance rather than fully autonomous driving. Drivers remain responsible and must supervise the system. Its real-world performance will depend not only on computing power but especially on sensors, software calibration and the functions that are enabled.
Volkswagen already uses Xpeng chips and Xpeng’s VLA 2.0 technology in the partners’ first jointly developed model. The ID. UNYX 09 is likely to continue this approach in a sedan designed more strongly around comfort and long-distance travel.
Volkswagen Focuses on Local Development in China
The partnership with Xpeng is a central part of Volkswagen’s China strategy. Volkswagen announced an equity investment in the electric vehicle manufacturer in 2023 and invested around $700 million. Together, the companies are developing vehicles that combine Xpeng’s platform technology and software with Volkswagen’s brand and industrial infrastructure.
The Anhui joint venture, in which Volkswagen holds a 75% controlling stake, has now produced its 100,000th electric vehicle at the Hefei plant. At the same time, the rapid price adjustment for the VW ID. UNYX 08 demonstrates just how intense competition in the Chinese market has become.
European Launch Has Not Yet Been Announced
The ID. UNYX 09 has not currently been confirmed for Germany, Austria or Switzerland. Its design, software and market positioning are specifically tailored to Chinese customers. A direct European launch therefore appears rather unlikely in the near term.
Nevertheless, the sedan is relevant to the German, Austrian and Swiss markets. It shows how quickly Volkswagen is shortening local development cycles and integrating Chinese software expertise. Insights gained from this partnership could later also appear in the group’s global electric vehicles.
