VW ID. UNYX 08: Price Drops After Just Five Months

Volkswagen is cutting the promotional price of the ID. UNYX 08 in China by 17.4% and adding a sporty special edition. Despite its 800-volt technology, large LFP battery, and Xpeng assistance systems, sales have been subdued since its launch.

VW significantly lowers the entry price of the ID. UNYX 08

Volkswagen Anhui is responding unusually early to the subdued market launch of the ID. UNYX 08. Just around five months after its introduction, the limited-time entry price in China is falling from 229,900 to 189,900 yuan. That represents a reduction of 40,000 yuan, or 17.4%.

At the same time, Volkswagen is expanding the range with the sportily styled Lieying Edition. The large electric SUV remains technically interesting, as all variants combine CATL LFP batteries with an 800-volt platform and extensive computing power for driver-assistance functions.

With the early price cut, Volkswagen is attempting to translate strong technology into meaningful sales figures more quickly.

Variants, range, and prices at a glance

The regular lineup consists of three versions. The two rear-wheel-drive variants each produce 230 kW, while the all-wheel-drive model delivers 370 kW and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.

Ultra PlusRear-wheel drivearound 95 kWh730 km230 kW219,900 yuan
Max PlusAll-wheel drivearound 95 kWh700 km370 kW249,900 yuan

The official list prices are 219,900, 239,900, and 269,900 yuan. This makes the discount particularly substantial for the base model. The stated ranges are based on China’s CLTC test cycle and are not directly comparable with the WLTP figures used for European models.

800 volts and an LFP battery for shorter charging stops

All variants are expected to charge the battery from 10% to 80% in around 20 minutes. The 800-volt architecture reduces current flow at high charging power and therefore potential heat losses. In everyday use, however, actual charging time still depends on the battery temperature, charging station, and charging curve.

Volkswagen uses lithium iron phosphate cells from CATL throughout the lineup. This cell chemistry is considered robust, comparatively inexpensive, and less dependent on nickel and cobalt. Developments in the Chinese battery market also show how rapidly LFP is gaining importance in China.

Xpeng technology plays a central role

The five-meter-long ID. UNYX 08 is the first production model developed jointly by Volkswagen and Xpeng. Its wheelbase measures 3.03 meters, and the interior is designed for five occupants. According to Volkswagen, 24 months elapsed between the signing of the technical development agreement and the start of production at the Hefei plant.

Every variant features two Xpeng Turing AI chips with a combined computing performance of 1,500 TOPS. They run the VLA 2.0 system for assisted driving on highways and in cities, as well as assisted journeys from one parking space to another. An unusual ferry maneuver using Xpeng VLA 2.0 is one example of the capabilities this software can demonstrate.

These functions are still driver-assistance systems. The person behind the wheel remains responsible and must monitor traffic. High computing power alone does not make the vehicle autonomous.

Three displays and Volkswagen OS 2.2

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SA8295P powers the cockpit. It is joined by a 10.25-inch instrument display and two 14.96-inch screens. Volkswagen OS 2.2 serves as the vehicle’s software platform.

The Lieying Edition also features black body elements, orange brake calipers, and black 21-inch wheels. It is available with rear-wheel drive for 219,900 yuan and with all-wheel drive for 249,900 yuan. Dual-chamber air suspension and adaptive dampers are standard on this edition.

Weak start increases pressure to act

The sales figures available so far explain the early change in direction. In July, 133 units were registered in China, followed by 379 vehicles in August. Although that is a significant increase, the absolute volumes remain low for a strategically important joint project.

Volkswagen is therefore also expanding distribution. Selected FAW-Volkswagen dealers will offer the ID. UNYX 08 through a store-in-store concept in the future. More sales outlets plus lower prices → the aim is to give the model greater visibility more quickly in China’s fiercely competitive electric car market.

What does this mean for Europe?

The ID. UNYX 08 is currently clearly tailored to China. No market launch has been announced for Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. Its prices also cannot be transferred directly to Europe because of differences in taxes, equipment, and distribution costs.

Nevertheless, the model is strategically relevant. It demonstrates how quickly Volkswagen can integrate locally developed Xpeng technology, an 800-volt platform, and Chinese software into a production vehicle. The early price adjustment also makes clear that even a technically strong electric SUV in China will not automatically become a sales success without competitive positioning.
