VW ID. AURA T6: LiDAR SUV Launches at a Bargain Price

The VW ID. AURA T6 is launching in China with up to 660 km of range under the Chinese CLTC test cycle and 170 kW of power. Two variants combine LiDAR with powerful computing hardware and an electronic architecture developed jointly with Xpeng.

VW ID. AURA T6 launches well below its announced price

Volkswagen is bringing the ID. AURA T6, a new electric SUV for the Chinese market, to the road. The first model in the new AURA range is being offered jointly with Chinese automaker FAW and starts at 129,900 yuan, equivalent to around €15,600.

That puts the entry-level price about 4.4% below the original presale announcement. The most expensive version costs 166,900 yuan, equivalent to approximately €20,000. However, these figures cannot be applied to Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, as taxes, registration, transportation, and equipment would be calculated differently.

LiDAR and 420 TOPS for advanced driver-assistance systems

The ID. AURA T6 is Volkswagen’s first all-electric SUV to be offered with factory-fitted LiDAR. The two higher trim levels receive a 192-channel sensor and a Journey 6H chip from Horizon Robotics. Its computing performance is rated at 420 TOPS.

The system supports navigation-assisted driving on highways and in cities, as well as various parking functions. It remains a driver-assistance system: the driver is responsible and must monitor the traffic situation. The scope and approval of these functions are also tailored to the Chinese market.

LiDAR is not an end in itself here, but part of VW’s strategy to catch up more quickly with China’s smart EV manufacturers.

The driver-assistance solution was developed by Carizon, a joint venture between Volkswagen and Horizon Robotics. VW is therefore deliberately relying on local partners that already have experience with the distinctive traffic conditions and software requirements of major Chinese cities.

CEA architecture developed jointly with Xpeng

Under the body sits the new China Electronic Architecture, or CEA. Volkswagen developed this electronic platform jointly with Xpeng. It connects central high-performance computers with zonal control units, reducing the number of individual control units and complex cable connections.

The architecture enables over-the-air updates, remote access to vehicle functions, and a monitoring mode for the parked car. The cockpit also uses a chip manufactured on a 4-nanometer process that can run large AI models locally. The partnership illustrates how Volkswagen intends to shorten its development timelines in China.

Xpeng is also rapidly advancing intelligent driver-assistance systems, as demonstrated by Xpeng VLA 2.0. However, VW is not simply adopting a complete Xpeng system; instead, it is combining jointly developed architecture with its own driver-assistance solution.

170 kW of power and up to 660 km of CLTC range

All four variants use a single electric motor rated at 170 kW. The 59.9 or 77.5 kWh batteries are supplied by CATL. Depending on the battery, Volkswagen quotes a range of 540 or 660 km under China’s CLTC test cycle.

CLTC figures are generally more optimistic than European WLTP ratings and therefore cannot be compared directly. The range would have to be homologated again for a potential European version. So far, however, there has been no official announcement of a launch in the DACH region—Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Spacious interior with three displays

At 4.81 m long, 1.88 m wide, and 1.65 m tall, the ID. AURA T6 is a full-size midsize SUV. Its 2.84 m wheelbase is intended to benefit passengers in the second row in particular. This makes the Chinese-market model significantly longer than the European VW ID.4.

The cockpit combines a 15.6-inch touchscreen with a 10.25-inch instrument display. It is joined by a 25.8-inch augmented-reality head-up display that projects driving information into the driver’s field of vision.

The rear cargo area offers 576 liters of space, expanding to 1,796 liters with the seats folded. The ID. AURA T6 also has a 90-liter frunk. This is practical for family use because charging cables and smaller items do not take up space in the rear cargo area.

What the ID. AURA T6 means for Volkswagen

Volkswagen is planning a total of 13 new models in China for 2026, including seven vehicles with electrified powertrains. FAW-Volkswagen is expected to contribute four of them, including two models from the new AURA family. More than 30 new electrified models are planned across the group for China by 2029.

The ID. AURA T6 demonstrates a clear direction: local development, aggressive pricing, and extensive digital features. Similar pricing pressure was recently evident with the VW ID. UNYX 08. The T6 is not currently intended for European customers, but its technology is likely to influence future VW models and their development processes.

50 kWh Battery in VW and Audi Models: What’s Behind It

The 50 kWh battery planned for upcoming VW Group models is expected to be technically based on the larger 58 kWh pack and limited by software. This simplifies production and could help protect the battery, but it does not guarantee any advantage in terms of aging or charging performance.
