Nio ES8 Becomes a Sales Driver: 150,000 Delivered

The Nio ES8 has reached 150,000 deliveries just one year after its market launch and now accounts for a substantial share of the brand’s business. The new five-seat version in particular is keeping demand for the large electric SUV high.

Nio ES8 Reaches the 150,000 Mark After One Year

The third generation of the Nio ES8 is becoming the Chinese premium brand’s most important volume model. Exactly one year after its unveiling, the 150,000th vehicle was handed over to its owner in Beijing.

The large electric SUV entered the Chinese market on September 20, 2025, with the first deliveries following one day later. Nio needed just 30 days to deliver the latest 10,000 vehicles. That matches the pace of the previous 10,000 units and indicates that demand remains stable.

For Nio, the ES8 is not only a successful model but has now become the central pillar of its vehicle sales.

How Strongly the ES8 Shapes Nio’s Figures

According to delivery data, nearly 100,000 ES8s were handed over to customers from January through August 2026. This means that this single model accounted for 62.21% of all deliveries by the core Nio brand. Across the entire group, its share was 38.02%.

The ES8 recorded 11,001 deliveries in August, exceeding 10,000 units for the second consecutive month. Together with the more upmarket ES9, Nio’s large electric SUVs reached 17,480 deliveries. They accounted for 82.55% of sales by the core Nio brand.

According to the manufacturer, the ES8 has led both China’s large-SUV segment and the price category around 400,000 yuan since its launch. This comparison includes vehicles with all types of powertrains. Among fully electric cars, the ES8 is also said to have set a new sales record in this price category.

New Five-Seat Version Broadens the Target Audience

An important boost came in July 2026 with the launch of an additional five-seat version. Previously, the ES8 had been available only with six or seven seats. Nio is now also targeting buyers who want plenty of space and a large cargo area but do not need a third row of seats.

The five-seater starts at 382,800 yuan including the battery in China. That is 5.9% below the original starting price of the three-row versions. Under the BaaS model, or Battery as a Service, the vehicle price falls to 274,800 yuan, while the battery is leased for a monthly fee.

This model significantly lowers the barrier to entry while also tying customers to Nio’s battery-swapping ecosystem. This is particularly relevant in China, where Nio operates a dense network of automated battery-swap stations.

Success Also Brings Dependence

For Nio, the strong demand is a clearly positive signal. The ES8 demonstrates that a high-priced electric SUV can hold its own against numerous new competitors from China. At the same time, the sales mix reveals a heavy dependence on a small number of large models.

A decline in SUV demand or additional price pressure could therefore hit Nio disproportionately hard. Conversely, the high volume improves its chances of spreading development expenditure and production costs across more vehicles.

What Does the Success Mean for Europe?

The figures relate entirely to the Chinese market and cannot be applied directly to Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. In Europe, the model line is sold as the EL8 because of Nio’s naming strategy, while the third-generation ES8 has so far been primarily relevant to China.

Chinese prices are also not directly comparable with European list prices because of differences in taxes, equipment packages, and distribution costs. Nevertheless, the milestone is remarkable: delivering 150,000 premium SUVs within one year gives Nio momentum for its future model strategy and strengthens the brand’s position in China’s fiercely competitive electric vehicle market.
