VW ID. Era 8X Combines Electric Drive with a Range Extender
Volkswagen is expanding its model lineup developed specifically for China with the ID. Era 8X. The SUV, which is around five meters long, is scheduled to launch in the Chinese market in September and is aimed at customers seeking plenty of space combined with strong long-distance capability.
Technically, VW uses a range extender, making the vehicle an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV). The wheels are driven electrically, while a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine can generate electricity on the road. Battery empty → the combustion engine supplies the energy without directly driving the vehicle in the conventional way.
Up to 400 km on Electric Power Alone
Volkswagen quotes a capacity of 65.2 kWh for the larger battery version. According to the Chinese test cycle, this should provide up to 400 km of all-electric range. Together with the range extender, the stated total range increases to as much as 1,500 km, depending on the version.

The Chinese range figures cannot be precisely converted to WLTP figures. As a rough estimate, an electric range of around 330 km and a total range of approximately 1,200 km may be realistic, but these are not officially homologated WLTP figures. The actual difference depends on factors including speed, temperature, and how the generator operates.
The concept is similar to other new EREV models from China, such as the Xiaomi SkyNomad with a range extender. It combines quiet electric driving in everyday use with the ability to continue on long journeys without relying on fast-charging stations.
Interior with Three Display Levels
The cockpit also differs significantly from the familiar European ID. models. A low-profile driver display is integrated behind the steering wheel, while two larger screens cover the infotainment system and the area in front of the passenger. Volkswagen is therefore clearly aligning the vehicle with the expectations of the Chinese market.
Other features include a redesigned steering wheel and a striking two-tone interior. It remains to be seen whether all design variants will be similarly expressive. Compared with European models, the control concept appears more focused on large screen areas and digital functions.
A China-Only Model with Potential for Europe?
A large SUV positioned below the group’s premium subsidiaries could also fill a gap in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland—the DACH region—particularly following the discontinuation of the Touareg. Nevertheless, a European launch of the ID. Era 8X has not yet been announced. Volkswagen appears more cautious about range extenders outside China because battery-electric cars and plug-in hybrids are more established in Europe.
The model would also need to be adapted for Europe and homologated under WLTP. Even so, the ID. Era 8X demonstrates how quickly Volkswagen is now expanding its Chinese lineup. This also includes distinct model series such as the VW ID. Unyx 09, which clearly differ from European ID. models in both design and technology.
The ID. Era 8X is primarily a signal of Volkswagen’s new China strategy: more local development, greater model diversity, and powertrain concepts tailored specifically to regional customer preferences.
For Europe, the vehicle remains an interesting preview rather than a concrete offering for now. However, if demand for EREV models grows, Volkswagen would already have a suitable technological foundation within its group portfolio.
