Volvo EX30 Becomes a Mobile Power Outlet as V2L Arrives via OTA
The Volvo EX30 is receiving a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) feature via a wireless software update. This allows the compact electric SUV to supply power from its traction battery to external devices. It is particularly useful where no power outlet is nearby, such as when camping, at construction sites or on cycling trips.
According to Volvo, V2L does not require a conventional hardware retrofit. Instead, it will be rolled out gradually as a free over-the-air update for new and existing vehicles. A suitable adapter must be connected to the charging port, after which devices can be plugged into it.
What V2L Offers in Everyday Use—and the Limits Set by Volvo
With V2L enabled, the EX30 supplies up to 3 kW at 16 A, according to the manufacturer. That is generally enough for many everyday devices, including chargers, smaller tools and e-bike accessories. The energy comes directly from the vehicle battery, turning the car into a mobile energy storage unit.
Importantly, Volvo has included a safety threshold. If the battery level falls below 20%, the power supply stops automatically. This makes sense in terms of preserving range, as a depleted battery can quickly become a serious problem when away from a charging point.
Plug & Charge from Model Year 2026: Charging Without an App or Charging Card
Volvo is also simplifying public charging for the EX30 from model year 2026 with Plug & Charge. The feature is initially set to launch in selected European markets. The process is pleasantly simple: just plug in and charging starts automatically → no authentication via an app or RFID card is required, and billing is handled using the payment details on file.
For drivers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, this is particularly appealing at compatible fast chargers because it removes a common source of friction: too many apps, too many tariffs and too many payment methods. However, its real-world impact will depend on how quickly operators and roaming platforms roll out widespread support for Plug & Charge.
Infotainment Is Being Updated Too
According to Volvo, the update also brings noticeable usability improvements to the cabin. Specifically, the manufacturer highlights a customizable context bar on the central touchscreen and a redesigned settings menu. The goal is to provide faster access to key functions, reduce the number of menu layers and minimize distractions.
