New Electric Cars Specifically for India
VinFast could fundamentally realign its strategy in India. Instead of merely adapting existing vehicles to the market, the Vietnamese manufacturer is reportedly evaluating two locally developed electric cars with the internal designations VF X and VF Y.
Discussions with Indian suppliers are apparently still at an early stage. VinFast itself has not yet confirmed the model plans and intends to officially unveil new products at a later date. Names, technical specifications, and production plans may therefore still change.
The key strategic shift is the early involvement of local suppliers, ensuring that development, components, and the target price are aligned from the outset.
VF X Is Intended to Be an Affordable Electric SUV
Initial details about the planned positioning of the VF X have already emerged. The compact electric SUV is expected to be smaller than the VF 6 while offering more space than the two-door VF 3. VinFast is reportedly targeting a price equivalent to less than €10,300.
This figure should not be interpreted as a potential price for Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. Local taxes, safety requirements, equipment, and distribution costs differ considerably. In India, however, the vehicle would compete in a particularly high-volume but fiercely contested price segment.
| Project | Current Known Plans |
|---|---|
| VF X | Compact electric SUV positioned between the VF 3 and VF 6, with a target price below approximately €10,300 |
| VF Y | Second electric car planned specifically for India, with no confirmed body style or technical specifications to date |
Local Suppliers Are Expected to Reduce Costs
VinFast apparently intends to involve Indian suppliers from the early stages of development. This is not only about obtaining less expensive components, but also about using existing tooling and proven manufacturing processes. Less new development and more local sourcing → lower costs and more realistic price planning.
Previous production plans had apparently stalled for precisely this reason. VinFast wanted to manufacture more of the VF 3, VF 6, and VF 7 in India, but was unable to reduce costs sufficiently to meet its targeted retail prices. The VF 6 and VF 7 are still expected to arrive from Vietnam as preassembled kits for local assembly.
India Is Becoming a Strategic Market for VinFast
The factory that opened in India in 2025 is the manufacturer’s first production facility outside Vietnam. In total, VinFast has pledged investments equivalent to around €1.7 billion. In the long term, the site is intended not only to serve the Indian market but also to act as an export base for South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
This regional focus is important for VinFast because the brand has not yet achieved its originally intended presence in Europe and North America. India, by contrast, offers a rapidly growing market with strong demand for affordable, compact vehicles.
Electric cars currently account for around 7% of the market there. The Indian government aims to increase that share to 30% by 2030. The segment below approximately €10,300 is particularly relevant, with local manufacturers already holding strong positions.
Great Potential, but Many Questions Remain
A locally developed VinFast model could be better suited to Indian price expectations, road conditions, and supply chains than a global vehicle adapted after the fact. At the same time, the manufacturer must strike a difficult balance between battery size, range, interior space, and safety equipment.
The VF X and VF Y have not initially been announced for the DACH region—the German-speaking markets of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Nevertheless, their development is relevant because successful, cost-effective platforms could later serve as the basis for other markets. Until official confirmation is provided, however, both projects remain concrete but preliminary plans.
