X Money Appears in the Tesla Robotaxi App
Tesla is apparently preparing another payment option for its robotaxi service. Entries indicating native support for X Money were discovered in the code of version 26.8.2 of the Robotaxi app.
In the future, passengers could use the payment service integrated into X to pay for their rides directly. Payments could potentially be made using an existing balance or a linked bank account, provided X Money offers these features in the relevant market.
The code findings show that technical preparations are underway, but they do not yet confirm a public launch.
Why the Integration Would Make Sense for Tesla
A robotaxi service depends on minimizing friction. Book the vehicle, get in and pay automatically: The fewer steps there are between the ride and payment, the better the concept works in everyday use.
For Tesla, X Money would provide an additional payment channel alongside conventional card-based options. At the same time, X could bring real-world mobility transactions to its payment platform. This would create closer technical ties between the two companies without necessarily requiring Tesla to replace its existing payment methods.
The standalone Robotaxi app also serves as a testing ground for features that go beyond those of a conventional booking app. These include controlling the air vents and adjusting the seat before or during the ride.
These Are the US Markets Where Tesla Robotaxi Operates
Tesla is expanding its autonomous ride service in several US metropolitan areas. The vehicles and level of supervision vary by location.
| Region | Stated Fleet Model |
|---|---|
| Austin | Cybercab and Model Y without a safety driver |
| San Francisco Bay Area | Model Y with in-vehicle safety supervision |
| Dallas | Model Y without a safety driver |
| Houston | Model Y without a safety driver |
| Miami | Model Y without a safety driver |
| Orlando | Model Y without a safety driver |
| Tampa | Model Y without a safety driver |
The popular Tesla Model Y therefore remains an important part of the fleet. In Austin, it is joined by the Cybercab, which was developed specifically for autonomous ride services and is intended to provide a lower-cost, more highly automated platform over the long term.
FSD v15 Is Expected to Expand Operations
Alongside the potential payment integration, Tesla is working on the next generation of its driving software. According to previous company statements, Tesla Full Self-Driving (FSD) v15 is set to feature a significantly larger architecture with around 10 billion parameters.
The new version could enable continuous operation of the robotaxi fleets. The active markets currently still have set operating hours. More available vehicles and longer operating times would increase transaction volume, making an additional payment method such as X Money more important.
It Remains a Future Prospect for Germany, Austria and Switzerland
For now, the indications relate to the US robotaxi service. Neither Tesla Robotaxi nor X Money is currently available in a comparable form in Germany, Austria or Switzerland.
For a European launch, Tesla would need more than regulatory approval for driverless operation. X Money would also have to meet the relevant requirements for payment services. EU rules apply in Germany and Austria, among other regulations, while Switzerland has its own regulatory framework.
From a technical perspective, the connection still makes sense: Booking, vehicle controls and payment could all be handled within a single system. Whether X Money is actually made publicly available as a complement to conventional payment methods now depends on an official announcement and the necessary regulatory approvals.
