Smart #5 Gains Apple Wallet Car Key Support
Smart is distributing software version OS 2.3.0 EU as an over-the-air update for the Smart #5. The most important new feature is a digital car key in Apple Wallet, allowing the electric SUV to be unlocked, locked, and started using a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch.
There is no need to open the Hello Smart app each time. The mobile device can remain in a pocket while the Smart #5 detects the digital key. Automatic locking when walking away and hands-free operation are also included.
Setup via the App or Vehicle Display
The Wallet key can be set up either through the Hello Smart app or directly via the vehicle’s central display. Sharing it with additional drivers is particularly convenient, as they do not need their own Smart account.
Shared access can subsequently be revoked through Apple Wallet or the vehicle app. This makes sharing the car within families and small teams easier, without having to pass around a conventional key fob.

Driving Settings Should Respond More Smoothly
In addition to the digital key, Smart is optimizing the stability and performance of the driving settings. This should make personal configurations more reliable to adjust and easier to reset.
In everyday use, this is less noticeable than the Wallet key, but it can make a difference when drivers change frequently. Change the settings → the system should apply the selection faster and more reliably.
Distraction Warning Monitors the Passenger Display
The distraction warning function has also been revised. It should be better at detecting when the driver repeatedly or continuously looks toward the passenger display while driving. In this case, a warning message appears.
The function is active in all drive modes except P. Smart is thus addressing a fundamental risk posed by expansive display layouts: Additional screens provide convenience, but they must not continuously divert the driver’s attention from the road.
Gradual Rollout Through Mid-September
OS 2.3.0 EU will not be delivered to all vehicles at the same time. The European rollout is taking place gradually and is expected to be completed by mid-September 2026, including in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
Owners who do not yet see the update therefore do not need to take immediate action. The Smart #5 will receive the new version wirelessly, with no workshop visit required for installation.
