Audi A4 e-tron: SSP launch reportedly pushed back to 2029

According to a report, the Audi A4 e-tron is not expected to launch on the new SSP platform until 2029. This could also mean that the electric VW Golf and an ID. T-Roc may not arrive before 2030.

Audi A4 e-tron set to become the first SSP model

The electric Audi A4 e-tron could reach the market later than previously expected. According to information from company sources, its launch is now scheduled for 2029. Neither Audi nor Volkswagen has officially confirmed the date so far.

The delay would be particularly significant because the A4 e-tron is reportedly planned as the first production model based on the group-wide Scalable Systems Platform, or SSP. The SSP era was originally expected to begin as early as 2026.

The potential delay affects not only one Audi model but also the timeline for a key electric vehicle platform across the entire Volkswagen Group.

SSP aims to bring 800-volt technology to the mass market

SSP is intended as a highly scalable foundation for numerous vehicle classes and group brands. It is expected to feature a modern software architecture, greater standardization of electronic control units and an 800-volt electrical system. The latter can enable charging rates of more than 300 kW, provided the battery, cell chemistry and thermal management are designed accordingly.

Audi already uses the powerful PPE platform in the premium segment. Models such as the Audi Q6 e-tron therefore demonstrate that the brand does not fundamentally need to wait for SSP from a technical perspective. By contrast, the more mass-market-oriented Audi Q4 e-tron is still based on the 400-volt MEB architecture.

Software likely to slow the timeline

The complex development of SSP and its software is considered a key reason for the later launch. The platform is more than just a new foundation for the battery and motors. It is intended to integrate hardware systems, electronic control units and digital functions more closely across the group.

Developments from the collaboration between Volkswagen and Rivian are also likely to feed into the future electronics architecture. Individual components of this new architecture could appear earlier in smaller models. However, that does not automatically mean the complete SSP will also be ready for series production.

VW ID. Golf and ID. T-Roc also delayed

The delay is also expected to affect planned Volkswagen electric vehicles. A future ID. Golf and an electric ID. T-Roc are therefore not expected before 2030. Both models were already scheduled to arrive later than the Audi.

This increases the pressure on Volkswagen to continue developing the existing MEB platform and keep its current model lines competitive for longer. SSP remains strategically important, but a later launch does not necessarily have to be a disadvantage. A mature platform and stable software are more valuable to customers than an early market launch with unfinished features.

New Audi design still expected to arrive earlier

The A4 e-tron is intended to mark a fresh start not only technically but also visually. A production model in Audi’s new design language, previewed by the Concept C, is reportedly planned. Its defining features include cleaner surfaces, a vertically emphasized front end and a redesigned interior with a greater focus on quality.

A model line derived from the Concept C could launch as early as 2027 on an adapted PPE platform. This would allow Audi to introduce its new design language before SSP. The new styling and new platform therefore do not have to debut at the same time.

The delay has not yet been confirmed

Until Audi and Volkswagen announce specific production plans, the 2029 date remains plausible but unconfirmed information. Model names such as A4 e-tron, ID. Golf and ID. T-Roc could also change before series production begins.

If the timeline proves accurate, it would nevertheless represent a significant setback. SSP would launch around three years later than originally planned. The key question will be whether the group uses the additional development time to bring together 800-volt technology, software and a viable cost structure in a truly compelling overall package.
