Nio recalls 686 Firefly vehicles in China
Nio has launched a recall in China for its compact-car brand Firefly. The recall affects 686 electric vehicles produced between March 20 and April 2, 2026.
The cause is a possible deviation in the manufacturing process. In some vehicles, the wiring harness for the torque sensor on the steering column may come into contact with the sensor rotor, triggering incorrect signals.
In extreme cases, the electric power-steering assistance may fail, which is why Nio is inspecting the affected vehicles as a precaution.
What happens if the fault occurs?
The torque sensor detects how strongly and in which direction the driver turns the steering wheel. The electric power steering uses this data to provide the appropriate level of assistance.
If contact with the wiring harness causes implausible signals, the steering-system warning light may initially illuminate. In the worst case, electric assistance may then be lost, meaning considerably more effort could be required to steer. The recall description does not mention any mechanical failure of the steering system.

How Nio is fixing the problem
Service technicians will first check whether the wiring harness could come into contact with the sensor rotor. If signs of contact or unfavorable positioning are found, Nio will replace the wiring harness free of charge.
Some vehicles have already been inspected or repaired and therefore do not need to return to the workshop. Other owners will be notified via the Nio app, by text message, or by phone.
Recall currently applies only to China
The announced campaign applies to vehicles in the Chinese market. It does not currently trigger an automatic recall in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. There are no indications in connection with this campaign that vehicles in the DACH region—the German-speaking markets of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland—are affected.
Measured against sales figures, the campaign remains limited in scope. Firefly delivered a total of 5,852 vehicles in August 2026, around 35% more than in the same month of the previous year. Deliveries from January through August totaled 40,795 vehicles.
Nevertheless, the recall demonstrates how sensitive modern electric steering systems can be to small manufacturing tolerances. On the positive side, Nio is addressing the risk through targeted inspections and, where necessary, the relatively straightforward replacement of a component.
