MG2 set to enter the electric B-segment in 2027
MG is preparing a new small electric car that is currently being developed under the name MG GO. The production model is likely to be launched as the MG2 and is expected to compete with models such as the VW ID. Polo from 2027.
Rather than competing solely on a particularly low starting price, MG apparently intends to offer a well-rounded package. Distinctive, relatively sporty styling and practical everyday equipment are intended to set the small car apart from low-cost entry-level models. However, specific details about the battery, range, power and price have yet to be announced.
The MG2 could become MG’s high-volume model in Europe, but key product specifications and the exact timetable have not yet been officially confirmed.
Production in Spain intended to avoid import tariffs
Under current plans, the MG2 is ultimately to be built in Ferrol in Spain’s Galicia region. MG’s Chinese parent company SAIC is reportedly working to establish the site and the associated European supply chains.
A vehicle produced in the EU would not be subject to the additional countervailing duties imposed on fully assembled electric cars imported from China. This could give MG more flexibility on pricing and margins. However, how European the MG2 will ultimately be also depends on where its battery, drivetrain and other key components are manufactured.
To bring the model to market quickly, production is initially expected to begin in China. This could allow MG to start deliveries as early as 2027, with the Spanish plant taking over later. During this transition period, SAIC would either have to factor the additional duties into the price or absorb some of them itself.
Technical platform likely to come from the MG4 Urban
The MG4 Urban platform is expected to serve as the basis. MG is also likely to use existing assemblies for other components. This will reduce development work and costs, while European-specific tuning could give the MG2 its own character in terms of suspension, controls and equipment.
The design is being developed by MG in London. Together with the planned production in Spain, this would make the small car significantly more tailored to Europe than a pure import model. In the price-sensitive B-segment in particular, this proximity to the market could be relevant for delivery times, model variants and spare-parts availability.
73,000 MG2s per year is an ambitious target
An annual production volume of around 73,000 vehicles is under discussion for the MG2. The planned plant in Ferrol is expected to be capable of producing around 120,000 cars per year in total. The small car would therefore account for roughly 61% of its capacity, with other MG models needed to supplement production at the site.
| Metric | MG2 | VW entry-level models |
|---|---|---|
| Planned annual volume | around 73,000 vehicles | around 400,000 vehicles |
| Number of models | one model | four models |
| Average per model | around 73,000 vehicles | around 100,000 vehicles on average |
However, Volkswagen is planning this volume across four small cars from the group’s brands, whereas MG’s figure relates to just one model. On a per-model basis, the two projects are therefore on a similar scale. The orders for the new entry-level models from VW, Škoda and Cupra show how strong demand for affordable electric cars already is.
What the MG2 means for Germany, Austria and Switzerland
In the DACH region—Germany, Austria and Switzerland—the MG2 could become an interesting alternative to the ID. Polo, Renault 5 and upcoming electric small cars from Škoda and Dacia. The key factors will include not only the list price, but also leasing rates, standard equipment, rapid-charging performance and realistic winter range.
MG has recently demonstrated through several promotional offers how aggressively the brand is competing for market share. The limited-time MG EV Bonus for existing models provides an indication of this strategy. However, it is not yet possible to determine whether the MG2 will be priced equally aggressively.
The combination of European production, an existing platform and a high target volume is promising in principle. However, until MG presents the production model together with its technical specifications and a confirmed price, the name, production figures and market launch should all be regarded as provisional plans.
