Leapmotor is taking on a special role at Stellantis
Stellantis owns long-established names such as Alfa Romeo, Citroën, Lancia and Peugeot. Even so, the relatively young Chinese brand Leapmotor is considered one of the most exciting candidates for growth within the group.
Stellantis is Leapmotor’s largest single shareholder and works with the manufacturer through a joint venture for international distribution. Leapmotor remains an independent brand and was not founded by the European automotive group.
Stellantis already classifying Leapmotor as an iconic brand should primarily be understood as a strategic and communications-driven upgrade.
What the term “iconic” really means
Leapmotor was founded just over ten years ago. It would therefore be premature to place the brand historically on the same level as European manufacturers, some of which have existed for more than a century.
In a business context, however, the choice of words makes sense. Leapmotor is expected to build strong brand recognition within a short period and give Stellantis access to competitive EV technology from China. The key factor is therefore not so much tradition as future market potential.
B03 and D19 cover two price segments
At the Paris Motor Show, Leapmotor plans to announce further details about two important models for Europe. The electric B03 subcompact targets the growing entry-level segment, where models including the VW ID. Polo and the electric Renault Twingo are expected.
At the other end of the model range is the D19. The large electric SUV is intended to establish Leapmotor in higher price brackets and demonstrate that the brand does not plan to grow solely through affordable city cars.
| Model | Positioning | Expected price |
|---|---|---|
| Leapmotor B03 | Electric subcompact for Europe | Around €20,000 |
| Leapmotor D19 | Large electric SUV and flagship | Around €70,000 |
For now, the stated prices should be treated as a guide. Only when the European configurations are announced will it become clear which batteries, powertrains and equipment will actually be offered. Particularly in the case of the B03, tariffs, local production and equipment specifications for individual markets are also likely to affect the final price.
Europe is becoming the decisive test for Leapmotor
According to the market data released, Leapmotor has already achieved a share of more than 3.5% among battery-electric vehicles in the EU. However, without a clearly specified period and a consistent definition, this figure can only be compared with other manufacturers’ annual statistics to a limited extent.
Nevertheless, the trend is clear. Leapmotor is growing quickly and could put established brands under pressure in European EV sales. A recent EV sales ranking featuring Leapmotor, VW and BMW illustrates how dynamically the balance of power is shifting.
Competition will be particularly fierce in the affordable segment. Chinese manufacturers will face upcoming entry-level models from European groups, for which more than 70,000 orders at VW, Škoda and Cupra have already been reported.
Why Stellantis is backing Leapmotor
For Stellantis, the partnership provides faster access to EV platforms, software and cost-efficient development. Leapmotor, in turn, benefits from the sales network, service infrastructure and brand presence of a group that knows the European market extremely well.
This combination can make market entry considerably easier. A competitive car alone is not enough in Germany, Austria and Switzerland if workshops, spare-parts availability, financing and residual values fail to convince customers.
What supports the strategy
- A broad model range, from an affordable subcompact to a large SUV
- Access to Stellantis’s European sales network
- Fast development cycles and competitive EV technology
Questions that remain unanswered
- Final prices and equipment for the DACH region—Germany, Austria and Switzerland
- Long-term positioning alongside the existing Stellantis brands
- Service quality, residual values and parts availability amid rapid growth
Leapmotor must now live up to its ambitions
For now, the description of Leapmotor as an iconic brand is more of an aspiration than an accolade. With the B03, however, Leapmotor could target precisely the segment in which Europe urgently needs affordable EVs. At the same time, the D19 is intended to prove that the brand can also compete above the mass market.
Whether Leapmotor actually becomes a key pillar within the Stellantis ecosystem will be determined not by marketing terminology, but by prices, products and the customer experience. The starting position is strong, but the real test in Europe will only begin with a broader model range.
