BYD Sealion 08: 12,000 orders at launch, with BEV and PHEV options
BYD has launched the Sealion 08 in China and says it received more than 12,000 firm orders within the first 24 hours. That is a strong signal in a market where new SUVs appear almost every week and launch figures are fiercely contested.
Of particular interest from a DACH perspective—the German-speaking markets of Germany, Austria and Switzerland—BYD is not taking a one-size-fits-all approach with the Sealion 08. Instead, it is offering the model both as a fully electric vehicle (BEV) and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). This broadens its potential customer base, particularly in places where the charging infrastructure or long-distance driving needs are not yet fully suited to an all-electric vehicle.
Positioning, variants and design: Ocean Series with a focus on technology
The Sealion 08 is available in eight variants in China. Visually, the model follows the Ocean design language, including split headlights and a continuous front light signature.
A notable feature is the roof-mounted LiDAR, which is intended to support the driver-assistance functions. According to BYD, all versions come as standard with the company’s in-house assistance package, with particular emphasis on automated parking and urban navigation.
Interior: five or six seats and additional comfort options
Inside, BYD has opted for a bright, lounge-like ambience with plenty of soft-touch surfaces and a modern screen layout consisting of a central touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster. Some physical buttons have deliberately been retained for frequently used functions, which is often faster in everyday use than searching through menus.
The Sealion 08 is offered as a five- or six-seater. In the six-seat configuration, the second row has two individual seats with armrests, electric adjustment and leg rests, with a large overhead screen for the second row available as an option.
Technology: plug-in hybrid with a long electric range, BEV with 92 or 115 kWh
An important point for context: many of the stated ranges are based on China’s CLTC test cycle and will generally be lower under Europe’s WLTP standard and in everyday driving. Nevertheless, the figures are useful as a trend indicator because they show how BYD is developing its combination of battery capacity, charging power and efficiency.
PHEV: fifth-generation BYD DM with up to 400 km of electric range (CLTC)
The plug-in hybrid versions use BYD’s fifth-generation DM technology with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. The combustion engine is rated at 115 kW, accompanied by either one or two electric motors depending on the variant.
BYD claims up to 400 km of electric range (CLTC) for the PHEV, as well as a total range of up to 1,650 km with a full fuel tank and fully charged battery. Fuel consumption is stated at 4.6 liters per 100 km with a depleted battery. In practical terms, this means that drivers with long commutes who only occasionally travel long distances could cover a large proportion of their everyday mileage on electricity without giving up access to the gas station network.
BEV: rear- or all-wheel drive and large batteries
The fully electric model is available with either one or two motors. BYD specifies outputs of 320 kW or 370 kW for the rear-wheel-drive versions. The all-wheel-drive version combines 215 kW at the front with 370 kW at the rear.
Battery options include 92 kWh and 115 kWh, with CLTC ranges of 800 km to 900 km. These battery capacities are precisely what make the Sealion 08 interesting as a potential European model, as they could give a typical family SUV greater long-distance capability.
Fast charging and chassis: nine-minute claim and comfort technology
BYD is making particularly bold fast-charging claims for the Sealion 08: under suitable conditions, it says a meaningful amount of range can be added in five minutes, with a full charge taking nine minutes. In practice, such figures depend heavily on the charging station, temperature range, battery chemistry and charging curve, but they clearly show how BYD is positioning its flash-charging strategy.
BYD also lists technology such as rear-wheel steering, an intelligent chassis control system and dual-chamber air suspension with predictive adjustment. Under ideal conditions, this should mean less pitching and body roll, greater composure on poor roads and noticeably better maneuverability despite the vehicle’s large size.
European and DACH market perspective
Whether and when the Sealion 08 will come to Europe cannot yet be determined from these Chinese-market details. What is clear, however, is that BYD is once again demonstrating how quickly it can bring new models to market in high volumes, complete with large batteries and assistance hardware such as LiDAR.
The Sealion 08 is less a single model than a statement: large batteries, extensive driver-assistance technology and an aggressive charging proposition are intended to redefine the SUV segment.
