Volkswagen significantly cuts the US price of the ID.4
Volkswagen is launching a major discount campaign in the US for the VW ID.4. Private customers can receive a bonus of up to $12,500 on available 2025 model-year vehicles. For the 2026 model year, the maximum discount is still $6,000.
The campaign comes ahead of a production changeover at the US plant in Chattanooga. Production of the current ID.4 generation is winding down there as Volkswagen seeks to free up capacity for other SUV models. The remaining electric cars are therefore intended to leave dealership lots as quickly as possible.
| US model year | Maximum bonus | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| VW ID.4 2025 | $12,500 | Very limited inventory |
| VW ID.4 2026 | $6,000 | Wider selection |
The 2025 model year involves few technical compromises
The older model-year designation should not put prospective buyers off too quickly. In terms of equipment and powertrain, the 2025 model-year vehicles on offer are largely identical to the current model year. Buyers are therefore not getting a significantly older ID.4 in technical terms, but primarily a new vehicle that was produced earlier.
Volkswagen had already extensively updated the electric SUV in 2024. The update brought more power, greater range, a 12.9-inch infotainment system and, finally, illuminated controls for the volume and climate settings. However, the controversial window-control setup on the driver’s door remained.
The substantial discount does not apply to a stripped-down special edition, but to regular inventory vehicles from the updated ID.4 generation.
Around 423 km of range under the US standard
Many of the available vehicles are Pro variants with a 77 kWh battery and electric all-wheel drive. This version is rated at around 423 km of range under the US EPA standard. EPA figures cannot be compared directly with European WLTP figures, but they are often considered relatively representative of real-world driving.
The bonus can bring some ID.4 offers in the US below the $40,000 mark. This puts the electric SUV close in price to the all-wheel-drive Tesla Model Y. The latter achieves around 473 km under the EPA standard, but uses a much more minimalist control layout in the cabin.
Discount available only from participating US dealers
The campaign is currently scheduled to run until November 2, 2026 and is available exclusively to private customers. The bonus can be used when leasing or purchasing with cash through participating dealers. Because not every dealership actively advertises the discount, prospective buyers need to ask specifically about the customer bonus.
The campaign has no direct impact on buyers in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. US prices, taxes, model variants and incentive terms differ significantly from those in the European market. It therefore does not indicate an imminent drop in ID.4 prices in the DACH region, comprising Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
The ID.4 is expected to get a successor
The end of production in Chattanooga does not mean that Volkswagen is abandoning electric midsize SUVs. The VW ID. Tiguan with MEB+ technology is expected to become its eventual successor. Among other things, it is set to feature more modern software, more conventional controls and a redesigned interior.
Until that model launches, the current ID.4 remains a solid and now mature electric SUV. With a $12,500 discount, it is particularly attractive in the US to buyers who value good value for money more than having the latest model year.
