Electric Cars Overtake Gasoline Vehicles in Australia for the First Time

Australia’s car market reached an important turning point in August 2026. Of a total of 108,760 new registrations, 27,078 vehicles were fully electric cars, representing a market share of 24.9%.

For the first time, battery-electric cars ranked ahead of every other individual powertrain category. Gasoline vehicles totaled 25,824 units, while diesel models reached 23,608.

Gasoline25,82423.7%
Diesel23,60821.7%
Hybrid18,66217.2%
Plug-in hybrid10,5919.7%

It is important to put the figures in context: electric cars surpassed gasoline and diesel vehicles individually, but not the two internal-combustion categories combined. Together, gasoline and diesel vehicles still accounted for 49,432 new registrations.

Most New Cars Are at Least Partially Electrified

Fully electric cars, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids together achieved a 51.8% market share. This meant that, for the first time, most newly registered vehicles in Australia had at least some form of electrified powertrain.

The pace of growth is particularly striking. The number of fully electric cars rose by around 170% compared with August 2025. Although one strong month does not yet constitute a lasting trend, the scale of the increase points to a clear shift in the Australian market.

Australia has not yet displaced internal-combustion vehicles overall, but electric cars are now the largest individual powertrain category for the first time.

Tesla Model Y Becomes Australia’s Best-Selling Car

The Tesla Model Y made the biggest contribution to the EV record. Tesla delivered 6,414 units in August, putting the model not only at the top of the electric-car rankings but ahead of every vehicle model in the country.

Toyota RAV45,470
Toyota Hilux4,833

It was already the Model Y’s third monthly sales win of 2026, after the electric SUV also topped Australia’s model ranking in May and June. Around 3,236 vehicles are said to have been the six-seat Model Y L, accounting for roughly half of all Model Y deliveries that month.

The long-wheelbase version is therefore a major factor in the model’s success. Its additional space broadens its appeal to families that would have to make compromises with a conventional five-seat midsize SUV. The Tesla Model Y L also shows promising capabilities in terms of range.

Tesla Rises to Third Place Among Brands

Tesla recorded a total of 7,685 deliveries, placing it third among all car brands. Compared with the same month of the previous year, this represented an increase of 162.6%.

Toyota remained the clear market leader with 19,712 vehicles, while BYD ranked second with 8,231 units. In addition to the Model Y, the Tesla Model 3 contributed another 1,271 deliveries to Tesla’s result.

The figures are also notable because pickups and large SUVs have traditionally shaped Australia’s new-car market. The fact that an electric SUV has overtaken two established high-volume models demonstrates the growing influence of practical electric cars.

What Australia’s Record Means for the EV Market

Australia faces different conditions from the DACH region—the German-speaking markets of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Long distances, sparsely populated areas, and the longstanding dominance of diesel pickups place greater demands on range and charging infrastructure.

Nevertheless, August shows that electric cars can become mass-market products even under these conditions. The key questions now are whether their share will remain high over several months and whether the expansion of public fast-charging infrastructure can keep pace with the growing vehicle fleet.

For Tesla, the result is a strong signal. The Model Y remains one of the company’s most important international growth drivers and also leads the 2026 Western European EV ranking. Its monthly sales win in Australia underlines that the SUV is competitive not only within the electric segment but can also lead the overall market.
