MG 07 estate appears on the road for the first time
MG is apparently preparing an estate version of the new MG 07. A heavily camouflaged prototype has now been spotted testing in China, after official design drawings appeared at the Chinese patent office in July.
The LiDAR sensor on the roof is particularly striking. It suggests that MG also plans to offer the estate with Momenta’s driver-assistance system. The brand has not yet announced a date for its unveiling or market launch.
Saloon-style front, more space at the rear
Up to the B-pillar, the estate closely follows the saloon. The two-piece, C-shaped headlights, windscreen and basic shape of the front end appear to have been carried over almost unchanged.
At the rear, the roof extends significantly farther and remains higher than on the saloon. Earlier images also showed a roof spoiler, a rear window wiper and a full-width light bar. MG is therefore opting for a traditional estate silhouette rather than a steeply sloping shooting-brake rear end.
LiDAR expands driver-assistance capabilities
LiDAR uses laser pulses to detect the vehicle’s surroundings and create a three-dimensional image. Combined with cameras and other sensors, the system can identify distances, vehicles and obstacles more accurately, especially in complex traffic situations.
In the MG 07 saloon, Momenta’s technology supports features including navigation-assisted driving and automated parking. However, it remains a driver-assistance system: responsibility still lies with the driver, and it does not constitute fully autonomous driving.
The roof-mounted unit confirms LiDAR hardware, but not any specific assistance features for a potential European version.
PHEV, 400-volt and 800-volt versions expected
The MG 07 estate is expected to offer powertrains similar to those of the saloon. However, MG has not yet officially confirmed that it will carry over the same technology. The possibility of all-wheel drive also remains open, as the saloon currently available is exclusively front-wheel drive.
| Saloon powertrain | Power output | Battery | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plug-in hybrid | 152 kW electric motor plus 82 kW petrol engine | 30 kWh LFP | up to 198 km electric under WLTP |
| Electric, 400 volts | 176 kW | 67 kWh semi-solid-state battery | up to 610 km under CLTC |
| Electric, 800 volts | 235 kW | 91 kWh NMC | up to 845 km under CLTC |
China’s CLTC figures are not directly comparable with European WLTP figures and are generally more optimistic in everyday use. The key factor would therefore not only be battery capacity, but also the charging power MG enables for the estate. Our comparison of 800-volt and 400-volt architectures explains why the higher voltage is particularly relevant on long journeys.
MG 07 taps into an interesting European market trend
The saloon measures 4.89 m long, 1.90 m wide and 1.48 m high. Its wheelbase is 2.83 m. The estate can therefore be expected to offer generous interior space and a significantly more practical luggage compartment.
In China, the MG 07 saloon costs between 108,900 and 159,900 yuan, depending on the version. One of its main selling points there is particularly affordable access to LiDAR-assisted driving features. Strong demand, with more than 42,000 binding orders within 20 days, is also likely to have motivated MG to expand the model line quickly.
There has not yet been an announcement for Germany, Austria or Switzerland. However, an electric estate with 800-volt technology could fit well into the range, as the selection of affordable electric estates remains limited. Whether MG actually brings the 07 to Europe is also likely to depend on how it is positioned against existing models and on potential import costs.
