Freelander 8 EREV: China Launch on September 3, With Global Rollout in Sight
The Freelander 8 is about to launch in China, with its official debut announced for September 3. The model comes from the Chery Jaguar Land Rover joint venture and is expected to be rolled out beyond China at a later date. Initial sightings in the Middle East already suggest that it will not remain exclusive to the Chinese market.
Important context for the DACH region—Germany, Austria, and Switzerland: The Freelander 8 is not a conventional BEV launch like a Tesla, but an EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle). This means electric driving with an internal combustion engine acting as a generator to extend the range—a pragmatic approach depending on the market and use case, and one that is currently growing rapidly in China.
Size, Suspension, and Maneuverability: Full-Size SUV Focused on Comfort
The Freelander 8 is a genuinely large SUV, measuring 5,118 mm long, 2,050 mm wide, and 1,898 mm tall. Its wheelbase is 3,040 mm. This clearly positions it above typical European SUV dimensions.
Technically, it offers some interesting features: dual-chamber air suspension and rear-wheel steering. Given the vehicle’s dimensions, the latter is more than just a nice-to-have, as it makes a noticeable difference in parking garages and narrow city streets. According to the specifications, the turning radius is 5.15 m, while 21- or 22-inch wheels are also listed.
The setup is also designed for towing, with a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 kg. Ground clearance is 220 mm, clearly emphasizing comfort and some light off-road capability rather than hardcore terrain.
Interior: Wall of Displays, Massage Seats, and a Refrigerator
Inside, Freelander embraces the “Chinese flagship” formula. Two seating configurations are planned, with five or six seats. The cockpit is dominated by a large 46.3-inch display beneath the windshield, which serves as the digital instrument cluster.
There is also a 15.6-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Huawei HiCar. Passengers in the second row get 16-point massage functions, along with a 17.3-inch ceiling-mounted monitor. The specifications also list a 10-liter refrigerator and folding tables among the comfort features.
The Freelander 8 deliberately plays the “living room on wheels” card: lots of space, plenty of comfort, and extensive screen real estate.
Powertrain: EREV With 60.3 kWh LFP Battery, AWD, and 610 kW
The Freelander 8 uses an EREV system with a 1.5-liter range extender and a 60.3 kWh LFP battery. Its electric range is rated at 310 km under China’s CLTC test cycle. CLTC figures are generally more optimistic in real-world use than WLTP figures, so this number should primarily be viewed as a relative benchmark within the Chinese market.
A dual-motor all-wheel-drive system comes as standard and is expected to produce a combined 610 kW and 813 Nm. This enables the SUV to accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. At this performance level, it is clear that the Freelander 8 is not aiming for maximum efficiency, but rather effortless performance and comfort—similar to many large premium SUVs, except with an EREV architecture.
Price Range and Positioning
In China, the model previously entered presales with a price range of 339,900 to 459,900 yuan. This offers only limited insight into its potential positioning in Europe, as imports, equipment, tariffs, and homologation could significantly affect the price. The main question is whether—and in what form—the Freelander 8 will later be officially launched in additional markets.
Context: Why EREVs Are Currently So Popular in China
EREV concepts appeal to Chinese buyers because they combine two worlds: Much of everyday driving can be done electrically, while the range extender reduces reliance on charging during long journeys. The situation is different in the DACH region, where the public charging network has grown considerably and BEVs are the cleaner long-term solution. Even so, EREVs can work as a transitional technology for large, heavy vehicles, particularly in areas where fast charging or grid stability is not equally strong everywhere.
