BYD reveals the Seagull’s new format
BYD is preparing the second generation of its affordable Seagull electric subcompact. New design sketches show a modernized body with cleaner surfaces and distinctive three-pronged lights at the front and rear.
In China, the model is expected to be called the Great Seagull and launch by the end of 2026. Outside China, the Seagull is known as the Dolphin Surf or Dolphin Mini, depending on the region.
The new Seagull is not only growing visually; its dimensions also move it into a higher vehicle class.
A length of 4.21 meters changes its positioning
The key technical specifications come from Chinese regulatory filings. According to these documents, the new model measures 4,205 mm long, 1,810 mm wide and 1,570 mm tall. Its wheelbase is 2,650 mm.
This makes the Seagull 425 mm longer than the current Chinese model. The increase should primarily improve space in the second row and cargo capacity. It turns the dedicated urban EV into a full-size subcompact that moves closer to the regular BYD Dolphin.

95 kW provides significantly more performance
Power output increases from 55 to 95 kW. That represents a gain of almost 73%. The new Seagull should therefore not only accelerate more quickly but also feel more capable on highways and when fully loaded.
This step is particularly important for the European market. The higher output makes the EV more versatile and further distinguishes it from especially basic urban vehicles. The previously reported specifications for the larger Dolphin Surf confirm this clear shift.
LiDAR and a new driver assistance system under consideration
A LiDAR sensor was apparently visible on the roof of undisguised pre-production vehicles. This points to a more capable version of BYD’s God’s Eye B driver assistance system. However, there has not yet been any official confirmation regarding equipment, functionality or availability in individual markets.
LiDAR uses laser pulses to scan the surroundings and can complement cameras and radar in detecting objects. However, such a sensor does not automatically enable autonomous driving. Software, regulatory approvals and the system’s specific configuration remain crucial.
The interior gets a larger display
Initial views of the interior show a larger infotainment display, a redesigned center console and a two-spoke steering wheel. BYD appears to be bringing the Seagull closer to its larger models in both technology and design.
BYD is already working on upgrading the current model as well. The announced Dolphin Surf update with a larger display offers a preview of the direction in which the small EV is developing.
Blade Battery and fast charging not yet confirmed
A new generation of the Blade Battery and faster charging technology are considered likely. However, the manufacturer has not yet officially stated whether the Great Seagull will actually receive BYD’s Flash Charging system or what charging power it might support.
For everyday use, this would be more important than another increase in motor output. A small battery with high charging power could enable short stops on long journeys while keeping vehicle weight and price comparatively low.
Is the new Dolphin Surf coming to Europe?
Exports to Europe appear plausible but have not yet been confirmed. The model could arrive there as the next generation of the Dolphin Surf. The current Dolphin Surf starts at around €22,900 in Europe.
The larger dimensions, more powerful motor and potential LiDAR equipment are likely to make the new generation more expensive. Nevertheless, a starting price below €30,000 appears realistic, although this remains speculation for now. The launch dates for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as well as the European battery options, also remain unknown.
One thing is already clear: BYD is developing its most affordable EV from a minimalist city car into a much more versatile electric subcompact. If the price and charging performance are competitive, the new Dolphin Surf could put considerable pressure on rivals in Europe’s entry-level segment.
