Spanish BYD deal sends a strong price signal
BYD is intensifying the price war in Europe. In Spain, the BYD Dolphin Surf is currently being offered for €12,995, putting it in a price range previously occupied mainly by affordable combustion-engine cars.
However, the headline price comes with conditions. It requires financing through a partner bank and takes available incentives into account. The regular cash price may therefore be higher, while financing costs affect the total amount paid.
A low promotional price is only truly comparable when incentives, down payment, monthly installments, final payment and equipment are considered together.
These BYD offers are on the table
In addition to the small electric car, larger models are also being offered at significantly lower prices. However, these are not all fully electric vehicles, as the Dolphin G DM-i and Atto 2 DM-i use plug-in hybrid powertrains.

These figures represent the best possible promotional prices after the relevant conditions have been taken into account. Differences in equipment, local incentives and financing models prevent a direct comparison based solely on the final price.
800 volts make the Atto 3 Evo particularly interesting
For the BYD Atto 3, price is not the only relevant factor. According to the available information, the Evo version is based on an 800-volt architecture, which, with a suitable battery and charging station, can enable higher charging rates and a more stable charging curve.
An electric SUV with modern high-voltage technology for less than €30,000 would make a clear statement in the European market. However, the extent of the real-world advantage depends on the battery, maximum charging rate and thermal management. System voltage alone does not guarantee a short charging stop.
Why prices are calculated differently in Spain and Germany
European vehicle prices cannot be transferred directly from one country to another. National incentive programs, taxes, dealer promotions and credit terms can result in differences of several thousand euros. Spain is therefore no indication that the Dolphin Surf will also be offered in Austria or Switzerland for €12,995 in the near future.
For prospective buyers in Germany, a possible price of €14,190 is nevertheless noteworthy. At that level, BYD is positioning the small car as a serious alternative to used electric vehicles and affordable combustion-engine cars, provided the individual eligibility requirements for incentives are met.
BYD is not just buying market share
The aggressive offers are intended to attract new buyers to the brand and increase capacity utilization across its European sales network. At the same time, BYD is building on cost advantages from battery production, its proprietary vehicle technology and a broad model range that could extend beyond short-term discounts.
This is increasing the pressure on established manufacturers in the small-car and compact segments. Customers initially benefit from more choice and lower entry-level prices. However, the overall package of purchase price, financing, insurance, charging performance, warranty and eventual resale value remains decisive.
