Xpeng integrates Google Maps with its own onboard system
Xpeng is adapting its vehicle software more closely to European preferences. Instead of simply transferring map data from China, the manufacturer will integrate Google services in the future. The new Xpeng Mona L03 for Europe is set to be the first model to use them.
The focus is on the Google Maps SDK. According to Xpeng, the L03 will be the first production car to use this new solution. Up-to-date maps, points of interest, and traffic information will come from Google, while Xpeng will continue to design the user interface and operating logic.
Google provides the underlying map data, while Xpeng retains control over the presentation, features, and user experience.
Google Maps SDK is not the same as Android Automotive
The technical distinction is important. The Google Maps SDK integrates mapping services into the infotainment system without requiring the entire software interface to come from Google. This allows Xpeng to use familiar Google data while retaining its own design and brand-specific features.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are expected to be supported alongside the built-in system. This gives drivers flexibility, allowing them to use either the integrated navigation or their preferred smartphone platform.
Map data expected to support VLA 2.0
Xpeng also intends to link Google’s map data with its future Next Generation Pilot driver assistance system. This includes VLA 2.0, which is designed to handle complex traffic situations using AI-based environmental perception. Initial demonstrations have already shown demanding maneuvers, including autonomous navigation on a ferry without lane markings.
However, VLA 2.0 has not been announced for the L03 at launch. The feature is expected to follow later via an update. Up-to-date, regionally relevant map data could help Xpeng adapt its assistance features more quickly for markets outside China.
Level 2++ remains a driver assistance system
Xpeng describes the planned range of features as Level 2++. However, this term is not a separate official level of driving automation. For drivers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the key point remains that the system only provides assistance; responsibility and continuous supervision remain with the human driver.
Google Maps alone does not make a vehicle autonomous. Maps provide additional context, while cameras, sensors, computing power, and driving software must still detect and assess the immediate surroundings.
Why the Google strategy makes sense for Europe
Good hardware can quickly lose its appeal in everyday use if navigation, traffic data, or points of interest are unreliable. By working with Google, Xpeng gains access to an established data platform in Europe and can focus more closely on the user interface itself and vehicle-specific features.
Other Chinese manufacturers are taking a similar approach. BYD is also integrating extensive Google services into newer vehicles, including the updated BYD Atto 3. Depending on the model, the integration extends beyond map data to include additional Google applications.
For Xpeng, this middle-ground approach is logical: familiar map data for European users, a proprietary brand interface, and additional smartphone integration. Whether the combination works as smoothly as promised will become clear when the first European vehicles arrive and later VLA updates are released.
