Onvo L80 Gets a More Striking Look
Nio subsidiary Onvo is expanding the L80 range with the so-called Starlight design package. It combines a new blue paint finish with exclusive 21-inch wheels and is aimed at buyers who previously found the large family SUV too understated in appearance.
In China, the package costs exactly 10,080 yuan for orders placed by September 30, 2026, equivalent to around €1,300. It explicitly does not include any changes to the battery, powertrain, or charging performance.

For everyday use, the package therefore primarily offers greater individuality. Range, performance, and charging times remain unchanged, while the large wheels could even have a small impact on energy consumption and comfort, depending on the tires.
The new color and larger wheels attract more attention, but they do not make the Onvo L80 a technically new model.
Deliveries Have Declined Since the Market Launch
The timing of the model update is no coincidence. In August, 3,139 Onvo L80s were delivered, 2.9% fewer than in July. Monthly deliveries have therefore declined for three consecutive months since the strong launch month of May.
Onvo delivered 5,949 vehicles in May. By the end of August, cumulative deliveries had reached 16,406 units, with the L80 most recently accounting for around 35.6% of Onvo’s total volume.
Nevertheless, the decline should not be viewed in isolation. New models often benefit from an order backlog at launch that is initially cleared quickly. Demand then normalizes, making a design package a relatively inexpensive way to provide a fresh incentive to buy.
BaaS Lowers the L80’s Entry Price
The Onvo L80 launched in China on May 15, 2026. The large electric SUV shares its platform and dimensions with the three-row L90 but has five seats and a correspondingly spacious cargo area.
With an 85 kWh battery, the L80 starts at 242,800 yuan, equivalent to around €30,500. Under the BaaS model, short for Battery as a Service, the vehicle price falls to 156,800 yuan, or around €19,700. The separately leased battery costs 899 yuan per month, equivalent to approximately €115.
More than 90% of the first L80 buyers chose this leasing model. This demonstrates the strong appeal of the lower entry price in the Chinese market, although the ongoing fees must be taken into account over a longer ownership period.
In addition, 62% of early customers selected the Max+ trim. It includes LiDAR and the Shenji NX9031 chip for the vehicle’s advanced driver-assistance features.
Design-Focused Special Editions as a Proven Group Strategy
With the Starlight package, Onvo is following a strategy also used by sister brand Firefly. Exclusive colors, wheels, and limited special editions generate attention without requiring changes to the powertrain or vehicle platform.
This differentiation can be particularly helpful in China’s crowded electric car market. However, the package alone is unlikely to reverse the sales trend in the long term. Price, software, assistance systems, and the BaaS offering remain the decisive factors.
For the DACH Market, the L80 Remains a Future Prospect
The new design package will initially be offered exclusively in China. There is still no confirmed launch date for the Onvo L80 in the DACH region—Germany, Austria, and Switzerland—and the converted prices cannot be applied directly to Europe because of taxes, registration requirements, and equipment differences.
The model remains interesting nonetheless, as Nio could eventually establish Onvo as a more affordable complement to its core brand. The L80 clearly shows what the manufacturer is focusing on: plenty of space, flexible battery costs, and now a wider choice of exterior designs.
