Vehicle-to-Load, or V2L, turns an electric car’s high-voltage battery into a mobile power source. On compatible Xpeng models, a special adapter is plugged into the charging port for this purpose. This can power devices such as coolers, laptops, lights or power tools at 230 volts.
V2L is a mobile power outlet for individual appliances, but it is not a substitute for a professionally installed home battery system.
Which Xpeng models support V2L?
V2L is available on various European versions of the Xpeng G6, G9 and P7, among others. However, availability may depend on the model year, software version and specific market. Before purchasing an adapter, check the owner’s manual, vehicle menu or Xpeng service to confirm that the specific vehicle supports external power output.
Depending on the software version, the feature may be called V2L, external discharge or power output in the infotainment system. It is often also possible to set a minimum battery charge level there. When this level is reached, the vehicle stops supplying power so that enough energy remains to continue driving.
The right V2L adapter
A standard Type 2 charging cable or a purely mechanical power outlet adapter is not sufficient. A V2L adapter approved for the specific Xpeng model is required. It signals to the vehicle that no charging station is connected and that power should instead be drawn from the battery. On European versions, the output side usually has a 230-volt socket.
For third-party accessories, vehicle compatibility, maximum load capacity, protective grounding, temperature resistance and moisture protection must be clearly specified. Adapters without verifiable technical documentation are unsuitable. Even if the plug fits mechanically, its electrical signaling must be compatible with the vehicle.
How much power is available?
V2L-capable Xpeng models typically offer a maximum output of up to 3.3 kW. The figure stated in the specific vehicle’s owner’s manual remains authoritative. This limit applies to all devices connected at the same time, not to each socket on a power strip.
| Device | Typical power consumption | Suitability |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop or charger | about 50 to 200 W | Very suitable |
| Cooler or small refrigerator | about 50 to 200 W | Suitable; consider startup current |
| Lighting | about 10 to 200 W | Very suitable |
| Coffee maker | about 1,000 to 1,500 W | Usually suitable |
| Electric kettle | about 1,800 to 2,400 W | Usually suitable when used alone |
| Space heater or hot plate | about 1,500 to 3,000 W | High consumption; use only with sufficient power reserve |
Motors, compressors and pumps may briefly draw several times their rated power when switched on. A device with seemingly low continuous power consumption may therefore cause the V2L output to shut off. Multiple high-powered heating appliances should not be operated at the same time either. Overload → the vehicle will usually interrupt the power output.
Activating V2L on an Xpeng
- Park the vehicle safely, switch it off and check the battery charge level.
- If available, set an appropriate discharge limit in the vehicle menu.
- Fully insert the correct V2L adapter into the charging port.
- Activate external power output in the infotainment system or according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Connect low-power devices first, then add other devices one at a time.
- After use, switch off the devices, deactivate V2L and unlock the adapter.
Which devices are unsuitable?
V2L should not be used for systems whose failure could endanger people or cause significant damage. These include life-support medical equipment and safety-critical household systems in particular. Another electric car should also not be charged via V2L without the manufacturer’s explicit approval.
Especially important: Never connect the V2L output to a wall outlet or the home’s fixed electrical installation. Such backfeeding can energize wiring and endanger people. Supplying power to a building requires a suitable transfer switch, appropriate protective equipment and a qualified electrician.
Safety rules for practical use
- Protect adapters, plug connections and cables from moisture, dirt and damage
- Fully unwind cable reels when operating at higher loads
- Do not use overloaded or daisy-chained power strips
- Consider the total power consumption and potential startup currents of all devices
- Do not disconnect plugs under load, and check them regularly for heat buildup
Xpeng V2L is therefore versatile for camping, mobile work or a limited power outage. Using the correct adapter, staying within the power limit and allowing for sufficient battery reserve provides a practical mobile 230-volt power source.
