Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Gets Two New Batteries
Mitsubishi is expanding the battery options for the electric Eclipse Cross. Alongside a new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) version with 67 kWh, an optimized nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery with 89 kWh replaces the previous 87 kWh energy storage system.
The larger battery increases the maximum WLTP range from 635 km to as much as 650 km. The smaller LFP battery is expected to provide up to 472 km. The 160 kW front-wheel-drive system remains unchanged in both versions.
The new battery options make the Eclipse Cross more versatile: LFP is aimed at price-conscious drivers, while NMC is intended for customers who need maximum range.

Notably, the smaller battery offers the higher peak DC charging power. Combined with its lower capacity, this significantly shortens charging stops. The large NMC battery takes about 28 minutes to charge from 15% to 80%, making it around nine minutes faster than its predecessor, according to Mitsubishi.
The optional 22 kW onboard charger is particularly useful at AC charging points capable of delivering that level of power. At home, an 11 kW wallbox remains sufficient for most users, while 22 kW can provide a noticeable time saving during short stops at public AC chargers, for example.
Cell-to-Pack Design Creates More Space in the Battery Housing
The 67 kWh battery uses a cell-to-pack architecture. This integrates the cells directly into the battery pack without conventional intermediate modules. Using less housing material and fewer components can improve space utilization while also reducing production costs.
LFP cells are also considered robust, relatively inexpensive, and less dependent on nickel and cobalt. However, their lower energy density remains a disadvantage, which is why Mitsubishi continues to use NMC for the version with the longest range. The more affordable cell chemistry will also play an important role in the future Renault 5 with an LFP battery.
Technology from the Renault Scenic E-Tech Electric
The Eclipse Cross largely shares its technical underpinnings with the Renault Scenic E-Tech Electric. Both electric SUVs use the jointly developed AmpR Medium platform, now known as RG Medium 1.0. As a result, the new battery packs are being introduced in both models at the same time.
This close relationship is not a disadvantage for buyers. Mitsubishi can use proven mass-production technology and offer the model with its own equipment and brand positioning. Pricing and Launch Date Remain Unconfirmed
The revised Eclipse Cross has a towing capacity of up to 1,100 kg. This makes the SUV suitable for smaller caravans or braked trailers, although it remains below the towing capacities of larger electric SUVs.
Pricing and a specific launch date for the new battery options have not yet been announced. The existing model starts at €43,990 in Germany. Pricing for Austria and Switzerland, as well as for the new 67 kWh version, has yet to be confirmed.
